Overheating problems.

My 99 grand prix gt gets to about 210-220ish when I'm stuck in stop n go traffic. But it goes back down to 195 when I start moving. I think I have narrowed it down to what it could be.

  • Bad thermostat
  • Bad temperature sensor
  • Bad water pump
I just want some second opinions on what I should replace.

Thanks.

sounds perfectly normal to me

the fans turn on at 216 and 228 so that within spec.

It might run a tad cooler if you change the coolant and get a brand new 195 thermostat.

Got a question pertaining to overheating but not.

2007 base sedan GP 3.8 42K on the odo.
a/c no abs no speed limiter, just pretty much AC and air bags.

Sunday night, drove the car 15 minutes to the smoke shop, and came home, backed it in the garage and opened the hood for the night(was really humid sunday here) not even 15 minutes later the wife comes yelling at me about the car leaking red stuff( i thought tranny this is my first dexcool car) and noticed the O/F tank was bubbling like mad and had about half a gallon of dex on the garage floor.

What could cause this? its never done this and all my older gm 5.7's and up never did this. Am I looking to change the thermostat or is this a normal purge of the cooling system? if there is such a thing as normal purging but I burped the system and it had no air in it which is why I am thinking thermostat, buddy says head gasket but at 42K that should not happen IMO.
Thanks in advance.

must had got some air in the system somehow.

Change the tstat and bleed the coolant system with the bleeder screw on top of the thermostat housing, wait till a sold steam of coolant is coming out and close it up.

Blown headgasket would be the last thing on my list for the issue to cause this.

yeah. mine never goes all the way up to 210, in stop and go traffic, in a hot ass humid city. sooo yeah, i see why you're a little worried. mine when hot goes up to 195-200 then just hovers there, thats the hottest i've ever seen it.

Uhm... how much fluid was in the overflow in the first place? That's a f*ckton of coolant to just honk out of the radiator, fill the coolant tank, and overflow a half gallon.

minimum level was in there prior to sunday. I had the hood up so it was easier to hear/see where it was coming from but yeah it dumped alot on the floor but I did change the t stat out last night, new gasket, prestone dex was readded. Im half tempted to go back to my roots and put a true recirculator on there.
Yeah after the no brainer head gasket signs showed nothing I put that in the back of my mind. Now its the coolant, and the oil consumption is still there, even after testing and dyes there is no leaks or anything, I know there is NO ELLIS under the hood so this has got me scratching my head and the dealers plus my sidejob mechanic. Ive blown head gaskets before in more ways then one.

prior to changing the tstat I drove it a good half hour with NO issues at all, gauge stayed just below center line(assuming thats around 195/200) but I changed it anyways and bled the system.
