T.T.T Tapshift

Looking into getting a 05 Comp G and using it as a rally cross car, And I made a post on some facebook pages asking this question, but there was alot of back and forth about bell housings, and gear ratios.

What I want a solid answer to, is:

Due to the CompG having a tapshift transmission, yada yada yada. If it fails due to the constant abuse (which i know it's going to). Is it possible to just slap a trans from any 97-08 (or so) GTP, keep running it. Or will i need to find another tap shift trans.

thanks guys

Tapshift with 4 gears is about as useless as a ratchet wrench that can not ratchet. All of us who use it, pretty much think it is useless and we don't bother. 2nd gear tops in around 75-80mph and you will never see that on a RallyX stage.

The other aspect is the abuse, it will cook and probably break before long.

Then there is the FWD aspect, I don't care what most of the RallyXers say, but RWD and AWD are the better options here to have more fun, sure FWD can do it, but I would pick something along those lines.

I wouldn't spend more than $2000 on a RallyX car either, to start, if you get real serious then I could see a more potent vehicle is useful. So spending the money on this is really just a hobby, so I would keep the budget down...way down.

I don't rallyX...yet but I have friends who do, B14 Nissan Sentra (This I know is FWD), BMW e30/e36, 90's Subies. Anything that is either AWD or RWD with a manual is your best option to have more fun. With that in mind a FWD/Auto/3,600-3,700lbs is going to dampen that.

I thought long and hard about what I want when I do enter the world of RallyX and it is a 1990's BMW e36 318ti manual. Tiny package, 2,700lbs, RWD, and cheap engine swap galore. You can have one for less than $2,000, either keep the 4cylinder (which is a viable solution too) or drop in an M50/52. Raise the suspension, drop in some seats that will fit me, snow/mud tires on it and away I will go.

Check out what some people have and work with on grassroot motorsports forums.

I may be picking up the comp G for a grand.... So, it doesnt really bother me that it's fwd. Part out the good bits, have some fun with it. scrap it when i'm done beating it up

You can slap in another trans from a gtp, you will throw a CEL until you tell the PCM that it is geared at 2.93.

so if i just gave 0 f***s about a CEL light, i could get away with any gtp trans

As you said E30's or E36 beemers, yeah thats great and all, but where i live at. thoese types of car's are non existent. nobody has those. But gp's are a dime a dozen. Easier to go the the wreckers around here and get a part off a gp, than it would be trying to hunt something down for some "euro import exotic" type car

Gp's are cheap, and to me, cheap and readily avaiable, is what i want

The tap shift transmissions have a beefier 1st gear band and 4th gear clutch, as well as a different Valve Body / Channel Plate assembly (As well as a different gear ratio).

You have a couple options though. You could build a non-tap shift trans with the old (Tap Shift) valve body / channel plate / gears. You could also put in a non-tap shift trans, and replace the ECU with a stock GTP ECU. Going that route you would lose ABS / Stability control though. If you swapped out the EBTCM with a GTP, you would be ok (Still losing stability control, but re-gaining ABS / TCS).

My car is a GT, running a CompG Motor and Trans (With a GTP Valve Body / Channel Plate) and a GTP ECU (Re-programmed for 3.29's) and EBTCM.
