hi, just joined here. been on all the other grand prix forums since about 2002. this is just my first transmission question and this forum seems like it has the best info.

short story: lost 4th, did a trans swap to a low mile ZZP rebuilt tranny, shifts great, but leaking from reverse servo area.

pulled the reverse servo assembly out of my old trans and pulled the one out of the new trans to compare...

new trans looks like it has the newer designed (larger) o-ring. also has a heavy duty large spring.

but old trans didn't leak from that area.

would it make sense to put the old reverse servo assembly into the newer trans?? or maybe put the old one in, but use the newer style o-ring. if the heavy duty large spring is 1/2 a millimeter shorter, would that really make any difference since it takes less force to compress?

additionally, how do you force it back down to reinstall the snap-ring?? seems like it takes some force.

    thoughts?

    thanks,
    james

i doubt anyone cares, but i'll post an update for closure purposes and for future searches...

i ended up using the old reverse servo assembly out of my stock tranny (with lighter duty springs) and stole the newer designed piston o-ring from the rebuilt tranny. used the cap with stock o-ring from old tranny. set it in place, tap-tap-tap with blunt object to seat it in the cylinder (low enough to install snap ring).

    no leaks.

could just be the reverse servo assembly out of the zzp rebuilt tranny wasn't seating just perfect and maybe I could have just put that same one back in after cleaning it up. but either way, the car doesn't leak from that area.

the rebuilt tranny had been sitting in a driveway paperweight for over a year before I installed it. so maybe the o-ring on the reverse servo cap had shrunken a little bit too. whereas the cap on the reverse servo that i took out of my stock tranny had just been in a functioning vehicle.

    that's it.
