I was looking at an HID upgrade, but came across an LED retrofit for similar cash:

    LED 9007 kit

Anybody try one of these yet, or any LED kit?

I don't know for sure, but I think it would be like just throwing an HID kit in the halogen headlamps, glare everywhere and not much output on the road.

I'm thinking it would be the same because there are LED projectors just like there are HID projectors. TRS sells an LED projector but it's about 20mm taller than the Mini H1 6.0, so I know it won't fit in the 97-03's, but it would fit in the 04+ grand prixs.

We've done some comparisons here at work. The LED kits we have tried, are barely better than PNP HID kits, or the same. Neither come close to retrofits.

It's the same garbage as an HID kit, except you're now paying 150 bucks to blind people and look like a ricer.

Retrofits are the way to go for sure anything in a reflector housing is just going to scatter and just blind other people

Projector low beam only with a 35w kit

Perfect cutoff that doesnt blind people, and bright as hell

^Exactly. Obviously it's more expensive than your basic kit. But if you really want to go on a budget, you can get cheap projectors and an HID kit for around a 100 bucks now. Plus the cost of a spare pair of lights, then just take your time building it.

It can get pricey though if you add some better projectors and OEM bulbs and stuff. But the results are well worth it. I'll let my siggy do the talking.

I agree. LED kits are a waste of money and I'm sure you won't like their scattered output.

There is also a lot of talk on the Audi forums about LED headlights as they have been available on the cars for a couple of years. Only certain models/options include them. The overall consensus seems to be that the light doesn't reach as far and therefore if you live in a rural area, HID's are preferred.
I drink..so consider that when reading my posts.

LED's are more intense up close, but have a lessened overall lumen output in comparison to even halogen bulbs unless you way oversize them. HID's are the way to go, but obviously weigh in on doing a retrofit so the light is actually usable..

I agree, I did some more reading after I posted this. LED technology is coming up the curve fast, so thought we might be there on headlights, but I guess not yet. Jake and nos, can you guys post up some details or links to what you used for projectors and HIDs?

This is the the kit I used except I have OEM Phillips 85122 D2S bulbs:

I used the Xlens for the sake of being different. Hahaha. For a first time retrofitter, try these instead. They are smaller and easier to work with. I do believe there is also a write up floating around somewhere around here for the 97-03.

glad i stumbled upon this thread, i saw a 2500HD with led headlights, they were bright as hell. i have 8k hids in my car but i can barely see with them, no retros just in new headlight housings. i wanna step down to 5500 or 6k but id also like to do a proper retrofit. is there anything out there for like 100 bucks? retrofitsource has some but they are about double that.
