Ok, I just got my car back from the paint shop (painter repainted the rear bumper cover-original paint from last year had begun to peel).

I was really surprised to see they had touched up all of the scratches and stone chips. On the vertical surfaces it looks great, can hardly make out any of the original marks unless you look very closely.
Only problem is the hood, i'm thinking I called before the car was complete, because all of the chips have larger flat spots of touch up. So looking in the right light you can make out all of these spots. I'm thinking the detailer was planning on wetsanding and/or buffing and just didn't get to it.

Question is: What can I do now that will make these spots much less noticeable without complete removing the touch up paint? Thanks!!

I'll try and upload some pics.

He may have left those alone on purpose. Especially if it was just icing on a warranty cake. The trouble is if you were to lightly sand those high spots off with 2000 grit then polish, then all the chips would have compound stuck in them and look white. I suggest letting it weather through a couple wash jobs' worth of time, then look at it again. Unless the brush work was just real sloppy, those should wear down a little and look better than bare chips or white spots.

Also... if it really looks worse than you want to live with... go back and question the painter. Like you said, maybe they intended to come back and dab clear on then sand and buff. The boss might have seen what he was doing and said stop there thats plenty good. If he stopped in the middle of a process maybe you can finish what they started but at home.

Thanks! I just did try and hit a few spots by hand with mequires swirl remover and it takes alot of the excess paint off. Looks 100% better on those couple spots. The few spots i did....had extra paint all around the chip. Most spots appear to be about the size of a pencil eraser....I'm sure all my stone chips were no where near that large.

I do have a porter cable and have a little experience with it....but a little leary on wet sanding as i've never done it before.

I'm sure its a fine line between taking just the right amount of the touch up off....without taking it all.
