Some yobo toke out my passenger rear view mirror, the housing has only some light scuffs but the mirror is hanging out of the unit by the power window wires. I see this one on amazon Dorman 955-1295 Pontiac Grand Prix Passenger Side Power Replacement Side View Mirror : Amazon.com : Automotive, seems cheap enough but it only comes primed. Think I can get a decent match with some of that factory matched rattle bomb paint? Any recommendations on brand of paint or technique to get it looking decent? My car is black.

Any info on how to get them bolts out to remove the mirror on an 06?

Sure can but you'll want to wetsand, compound, polish. Don't use that Duplicolor perfect match crap. Get some body color paint in a aerosol can either from the dealer, or Sherwin Williams can mix some for you if you give them your paint code or my favorite...automotivetouchup.com

Once you remove the door panel. Should be 3 either 10 or 13mm nuts holding the mirror housing.

Then I would repaint the other one to so it matches. If you do it correct you can get a perfect match (well what's visible to the eye)

Thanks, yeah I wanna do all that. Never done it before and this should be a easy project to jump into it with. Is there a write up I can follow for doing the painting? Think 1 12oz can will do the job? Do I gotta clear coat it after the fact?

Not really but here's a rough idea

Since its already primer you can skip primering it

I would wipe it down with some diluted alcohol just to make sure there is no grease, wax etc on the primer

-spray a light coat of the color match paint allow it a few minutes to dry
-spray a second light coat and be sure that all the area that you want painted or being covered (allow enough time to dry)
-spray a medium coat (allow time to dry)
-evaluate how many more coats are needed where you're satisfied (usually I do 4-5 coats then begin wetsanding)
-start wetsanding i usually start with 800-1000 grit
-then move up to 2000 grit
-evaluate your work depending how satisfied you are if your not then go back and redo some steps
-compound/polish the wetsanding marks out. (At this point you should be have a smooth finish)
    -ipa wipedown
-light clear coat (allow enough time to dry)
-spray a medium clear coat (allow enough time to dry)
-another medium clear coat (allow to dry)
-at this point it's up to you as to how much coats you want to spray, once your happy allow 2-3 days for the clear coat to dry throughly.
-wetsand again start w/ 1000 and move up to 2k
-compound/polish.. By this step you should have a near factory finish.

There's several different ways to do any type of painting what works for one person may not work for another so adjust as you need to. If its the first time your trying to paint i would grab some type of mirror, spoiler etc from the junkyard and practice on that and get your process down.

Yes clear it. Without it you'll have a dull almost matte finish and won't match up to factory. Plus clearing it make it more resistant to fading and scratches.

Thanks man, just ordered the stuff. Gonna use all automotivetouchup.com stuff. You say skip the plastic primer though? I assume 1 can of clear and one paint should do the mirror right?

    When you say "
-ipa wipedown" what you mean? I assume you dont mean to rub it down with beer lol

Yea. One of each should be plenty enough. Get the clear from the same place.

IPA aka rubbing alcohol w/ a bit of water. Isn't really necessary I just do it to make sure there isn't anything but the primer for the paint to stick to.

I see if I can find you a more detailed write up on paint later since I've been drinking my mind isn't all the way here.
