Is the clearcoat peeling on the spoiler a common problem on the '97-'03 Grand Prix's? A lot of the GP's I have seen in the junkard have spoilers with peeling clearcoat. Our GP is doing it too. Does anybody have any tips on how to fix the peeling clearcoat with some rattle can clear (just as a temp fix until we can afford to get a decent trunk lid)? Does anybody have a pic of a GP with a black spoiler? Im just curious how it would look. Here is what our GP's spoiler looks like at the moment:

I don't think its anymore common then any other car. The spoiler gets beamed on by the sun often and if you don't do something to minimize the chance of clearcoat failure what do you expect. Applying a sealant and waxing the car every few months can minimize the chance of that occurring.

    Some options.

-Wetsand the remaining clear coat off and then apply a rattle can clear.
-Remove clear coat and grab a can of your factory paint code paint from Sherwin Williams or something..and repaint then clear. Wetsanding will also improve the way it comes out.
-It's a stock spoiler its not going to be hard to find another one there everywhere. junkyards..ebay..car-parts.com, moradpartscompany.com or just get aftermarket spoiler..example Pontiac Grand Prix Rear Spoiler GT 03 | eBay
-Eww no mix matching panels...black spoiler would look just like the accident victims cars you see driving around with a red bumper..green door etc.

I will probably try to wet sand and rattle can clear it. The whole trunk lid needs to be replaced. The paint on the lid itself is cracked by base of the spoiler, Im guessing the previous owner was trying to open the spoiler when the trunk was froze shut or something. Im just trying to make the car look a little better until when can afford to get its replacement. Right now money is tight and family comes before the cars. And the needs a few other maintanence things before the cosmetics are taken care of. Thanks for the advice.

That's a good list of ways to go. Which grit sandpaper do you recommend using when wet sanding?
