Hey guys i know i know theres tons of threads on this but it makes it very difficult to search for threads on HIDs when "HID" isnt acceptable to search because its 3 letters

i also realize that retrofitting is the way to go and looks a lot better and i couldnt agree more however at 17 funds for retrofitting arent there

First off i have a base 2005 Grand Prix

    Questions:

    1. 9006 is the correct bulb type right? i just purchased a 9006 ONEX 8000k Kit... i went with onex because i have several friends who have the onex brand and have not had any problems with them
New Onex 9006 Xenon HID Conversion Slim Ballast Kit 8000K 8K Blue | eBay

    2. do i need a relay harness? some people say yes some no... if i need one. do i actually need two? one for each light? and where can they be bought from? the hids are 35 watts so some say that there is no need...

    3. some people i have also seen say you need to disable your DRLs? if so how do you do this and why do you need to?

    4. i also want to get matching 8000k fogs... what exactly is needed for this? ive seen people mention getting glass lenses and other things. What bulb type are the fogs? the dealer on ebay that im using and would like to use has 9006 h11 and 893 8000k bulbs would any of those work?

    5. trying to restore headlights... ive gotten little to no improvement with the turtlewax restrorer... is the best way to just sand paper them and use that urathane mineral spirit mix or what? any suggestions? i dont want to spend $100 on brand new ones

thanks for all the help guys!

1: Should have gone with VVME

2: You do not NEED a relay harness. You'll be just fine without. Plus, you need one harness if you do get one, not two.

3: You do not need to disable the DRL's, but most of us do because there's no point in having your headlights on in the middle of the day. For 97-03 cars, you just remove the DRL fuse. Not sure about 04+

4: For 97-03 Grand Prix's you need 880's for the fog lights. For 04+ you need 898, I THINK.

False, DRL's kill the ballast because the voltage going to the bulb is reduced.

97-00 is DRL fuse, 01-03 you have to unplug the heatsink and maybe one other thing.

04+ people can tape over the DRL sensor thingy that senses light, I believe. Not 100% on how that all works.

For 04+ gm model's, unplug the sun load sensor for the auto headlamps. Plug a .5 Ohm resistor in place of the sensor, or find the wires at the bcm and tap the resistor in there and cut the leads to the sensor.

Hid and drl would be just fine using a relay harness. The relay harness will take low voltage signal and use a fused direct 12V connection from the battery.

    1) yup 9006

    2) no, you don't need one but its worth the $30. Do you want to take the chance of not running one and F something up in the electrical system and guaranteed its going to cost more then $30 to fix.

3)Last I checked the DRL are in the parking or the parking/fog lamps not the actual low beam so no you don't need to disable them.

4)You need another his kit, the bulb is 880 and you should also order a relay kit for the fogs as well. There isn't a glass option for 04-08 so just stick with what you have.

Thanks redcompg! The drls are in the turn signals. Where can i fond the harness? Will the 893 fit the 880? And have you done the restoring method yourself?

Yup any 8XX bulb will work so yea a 893 would fit the difference between the bulbs are the length and light output.

I use a similar method now but have used this method in the past with great results..if you can get the basic wetsanding method down you can do wonders.

You can go the eBay route for a relay harness but I personally buy my stuff from http://www.theretrofitsource.com/

Yes, if you wire the resistor you are disabling the auto on headlamps. When you turn the ign on they turn on. When cranking you are forcing low voltage upon the hid kit. The resistor tricks the bcm into thinking its daylight so they don't turn on with ign before cranking engine over. They also sell a time delay relay that won't turn them on for 15 sec after key is turned on.

I forgot the drl was in the park light on the new body, so the resistor trick will make drl function at night also.

    I'll stick with my 97.

But since the drls are in the fog/turn signals I don't need to shut them off then do I?

Just leave it as is. Hid bulbs are cheap ($15-20).grab a extra set when you get a chance just in case one goes out. Now when your talking about spending big money on bulbs such as Philips, CBI etc that are anywhere from $80-200 then you want to do what you can to save then.

You should be able to disable the drl

Or make it easy in yourself and google switchback bulbs and pick up a set

Definatley not. Hid bulbs will work fine but if you want a sharper beam pattern you'll need to space the bulb slightly from the housing a tad. However that's another story. For now get the bulbs and ballast put some tape on the light sensor and call it a day.
