Full Repaint

Hey guys, the paint job im talking about is not for my GP, but for my 84 pickup, and i was just wondering if you guys knew all the different coats and steps one would need to do to achieve a good paint job. Sorry for bringin this up on the GP forums, i just dont know another vast source of information, seeing that the few chevy truck forums i'm involved in arent very active. If anyone knows i would really really appreciate it. The truck can be brought down to bare metal as im redoing the whole truck and replacing alot of body panels. Thanks in advance.

Well I have done a few home paint jobs and have done it both ways down to bare metal and just down to primer I must say while it is a lot of work I like the bare metal job better BUT I think that was just an illusion I think if someone did not know it was down to that they would not really see the difference. However if your primer is peeling and chipping off you may want to do that Ok here is what I consider the best way. I actually took the fenders doors hood everything removable off, sanded and primed each part two coats of primer 4 coats (very thin) of paint three coast of clear coat do not forget to WET sand the primer between coats but not enough to go down to the metal also wet sand it before you put on the top coat. Time and patience are the key why did I dissemble it? So I could bring as many parts as I could into my basement to my homemade spray booth, now I have a 4 car garage and if I do it again I am not sure I would do that I would probably just build a spray booth in the garage these two lins may help as well 6 Tips on How to Paint Your Own Cars - wikiHow and SprayPaintVideos® - How To Spray Paint Your Car - Auto Painting & Bodywork Repair

Oh yeah use a step ladder for the roof and I recommend an HVLP (High Volume Low Pressure) gun

Although mine was for a car it should give you a general idea depending on what you want done.

My 1985 mustang coupe with body work done, painting door jambs, partial engine bay, black with blue pearl paint, heavy blue pearl racing stripe (can only see when the sun hits it just right), and 4 coats of clear ran right around 5K.

You guys are awesome, my truck is currently in the rust removal process so once it's completely de rusted, down to the last nickel size spot of rust I will start the priming and everything but I was planning on using Herculaneum on the inside of the body panels like the inside of the fenders and rear box walls just for durability, then paint the outside, think its worth it? I'm pretty meticulous so time isn't a big issue for me.
