I bought a Shift ViewII back in February of '07 from BackinBlack (BACKINBLACK's Grand Prix electrical mods page...) as a Birthday present to myself. I didn't really start working on the project till August of Last year, and its been on and off as you can guess or see.
So getting down finishing it up, and thought I would post up some of my work showing you where and how I mounted my display, since you kinda have to be on the "creative side" to install it somewhere neat and useful with in view.
I have seen a lot of installs where it was in the factory gauge cluster, or in the DIC display...but never one out board so to say. I thought this would be a cool and useful place to install it for my tastes, so off I went with my project.
Figured since the factory hazard button is always staring me in the face and out of place off centered on the steering column I thought I would mount the SVII display right next to it and give myself two "humps" now centered and aligned next to one and other so its balanced now, and still with in view.
Using the spare hazard button from my RWD turbo Grand Prix donor car, I turned it around backwards from how the factory one sits cause the back side is larger and flatter. I just cut a small window in the front for the display, and cut out a part in the back for the connection and the rest was cut and dry from there.
The only bad thing or mistake I made was instead of setting it by melting the plastic together as a hold while I affixed it with epoxy was it moved on me, and is slightly higher than I would like it to be. Exactly .0665" higher Call me anal LOL.Its too late to cut out and reset it or adjust it, so I will just live with it.
Covered the JB Weld with some POLLY putty for the next step and gave myself a nice smooth transition.
I added some more JB Weld around the bottom of it to insure it does not come loose, or move on me. And here is a couple of bottom shots to show the tight fit it was and how I notched the plastic of the main steering wheel surround so I could get it in there easy and hold tight.
What do you think so far?
The final pictures wont be posted up till after September (after the BGPM '08) cause I am working on something quite unique for my interior for this year.
Lets just say it will be pretty damn ultimate, you'll have to wait and see.
