I have a piece of trim that fell off the bottom one of my rear doors. It's the piece on the bottom that slides into a metal groove and is glued/taped to the door. The body shop that painted the door painted the door and then used glue or silicone to attach the trim, but it fell off during a really really cold MN winter day last year.

I was told to use 3M foam tape to reattach this. My plan was to get some of that 3M gunk removal and then if that doesn't work, get a razor blade out. If I scratch anything, use black primer (since it won't be seen behind the panel anyway) and cover it to protect against rust. Then pick up some black 3M tape and attach it after cleaning the surface with alcohol. I'm thinking if I can get the rolls of tape I can use those to make a continuous strip to attach, is that the best idea?

    Any advice welcome. Thank you!

I had the same thing happen to me what i used to fix this was automotive double sided trim tape from autozone. I scraped both the door and the trim with a razor, then i sanded the door and the trim piece lightly where the trim touches the door. I then cut the piece of trim tape exactly to the molding on top and bottom then I put in place an held for a minute and it stayed until I manually removed again for paint.

Did you paint over the part you sanded? or did enough of the paint stay on that you weren't worried about rust?

    I found this exact tape:

    Body Repair Tools : Automotive : 3M Scotch-Mount Molding Tape, 03616, 7/8 in x 15 ft

    ...at AutoZone.

Will this work well for attaching the large plastic piece I refer to? It's the one on the rear doors along the bottom on the outside that slides into the channel at the bottom of the door and needs to be taped/glued to the door to cover up the holes in the metal of the door. (The plastic piece is roughly 2 feet long and about 8 inches high..)

Front & Rear Door Lower Moulding Clip 10261327

You'll need these to attach the rail and the 3m tape to stick the top of the molding back on.

How do those clips work? That picture isn't very clear and I thought I just slide the part into the rail on bottom and used the tape on the top.

(I still have yet to put mine back on, I've been procrastinating).

    Thank you in advance.

They twist/lock into the metal rail, with the expanding side in towards the door. You slide the expanding clips into the holes on your door and push the post in the back spreading the clips out and holding the whole shebang in. I went to the stealership and was given a quote of $7.95 EACH for the stupid things. How GM went bankrupt charging that much for little plastic clips I'll never know. You need 5 each on the front doors, I have no idea how many you need for the rears.

So are you saying that these clips will hold the panel on without any tape? You just use the tape to add strength to the clips?

The clips hold the rail onto the door. If you look at the bottom of the panel you'll see that it is made to slide up under the bottom part of the rail, holding the bottom of the panel against the door. The tape holds the top of the panel on.

Ah, that makes sense then. So since my rail is already attached, I should be able to just slip the piece into the rail, tape it and I am good to go?

Probably. Unless your clips all snap off spontaneously like mine did. Just make sure you clean the surfaces you're going to tape really really well.

Yeah, I plan on scraping with a razor blade all the glue/gunk that the body shop that put on (talked to a dealership bodyshop and they said foam tape was best) and clean with alcohol the residue then I plan on sticking it on.
