Sounds like "crow's feet". A defect that happens when theres too much old, bad, or poor quality paint. Might look like this eventually. Usually requires stripping to bare metal to correct.

All Grand Prix, all the time. 69 Model J, 99 GT & GTP coupes. All junk, haha.

Spray-painting those areas would be pointless then, you'd only be able to turn the cracks black. Keep in mind when you go to get those other parts painted that some extra cost will be involved, to knock off enough old paint to correct that problem then make sure its not all wavy and won't peel afterwards. Might cost double what just scuffing and painting would over OK paint. Don't automatically get discouraged, but talk to a trusted shop sometime and get an idea what kind of $ you're looking at first. Wheels too. They can actually look at your car and discuss reality intelligently which is more than I can do over the web lol.

That's true, when I plan on doing major painting me and my dad are going to paint it he's not an auto painter by trade but I've seen a few cars he's painted in the past and he has done amazing work, I'm only waiting till January cause I live in AZ and my dad said its better to paint when its not so hot out.

Thats perfect. I've thought of painting my wheels and leaving the very outside rim (like 1/2") bright. Since you guys are gonna DIY, that means you can make it look as nice as you want. Enjoy the project!

After a few years, they have gotten flatter black. Clearcoat would have helped, but I didn't use any. I let the air out of the tires, masked them off, scuffed with scotchbrite and put down two coats of paint.

Thanks IDJ. The paint made a crappy looking wheel look ok. LOL

Awesome thanks for the help understanding this project. Why do you deflate the tires?

No problem. It is easier to apply the masking tape when the tire has no air, and you can get more paint on the lip of the wheel when the tire isn't protruding.
