So I am going to be doing a turbo build here with an L36 from a 98 Camaro. The engine and transmission are getting swapped into another car and I'm going to be putting a turbocharger on it too. I'll be using a WC T5 manual with either a stage 3+ or 4 clutch. Obviously It'll be intercooled too. I'm sure the trans will hold up just fine for now.
The car it's going into is a ~3300-3500 lb RWD car. TBH I'm not completely sure what's a reasonable estimate, but I'm hoping for low 12's from this build. It won't be a purely track car, I want this car to be a lot of fun to drive in the twisties. So I'm looking for reasonable spool times while still being able to put the power down. I'm not really looking for big horsepower numbers, I'm more concerned about making the car fun to drive.
I'm not opposed to getting modded rockers for it, but would like to keep it simple for now. The motor will be otherwise stock with DIY exhaust manifolds/cold air intake etc. In a few years I'll probably end up going with a turbo cam, a bigger turbo, a T56 6 speed, and a 9" rear end; but I'm perfectly happy with these plans for now.
I'm looking at Holset turbos right now because they're cheap around here, and I've heard that they're extremely reliable.
-I'm trying to decide between the HY35, HX35, and HX40. The only difference between the HY35 and the HX35 is that the hx has a bigger exhaust side. Which one would be best for my application?
-Also, should I plan on running a 3" or 2.5" exhaust from the turbo back? I've read contradicting statements about this.
-And finally what sort of numbers should I be expecting from this build?
thanks.
