This was about four months ago upon purchasing my 98 gtp, i was driving around with a buddy who was in his 94 z28. I had done all the work to this car so i knew a lot about it (CAI, cat. delete) and we came up to a light. straight deserted 2 lane road. We both had an urge to go so we waited for the light to turn, as soon as it turned i left, to no surprise i got him off the line and stayed about a length in front of him until about 90 and he started to pull on me, seeing as there were no other cars around we kept going and to my surprise at ~113 I flew past him?? Well turns out upon researching the car (which only has a 110 mph speedo in it) that from the factory it came with a lower speed rating tire which resulted in a speed limiter at 115, and the 110 mph speedo. gotta love thhe 4 door "grocery getters" though

yes some z28's came with chitty tires thus a lower speedo and limiter...kinda dumb...you would think theyd make them all the standard 245 50s wiht the limiter at like 150 or whatever

yeah that seems like itd be the logical thing haha. i was just shocked because he had never had it that fast before, and i dont really research fourth gens (i had 89 iroc which would run until it ran out of motor) but yeah you would think a camaro , at least a z28 would do better than 115 no matter what lol

    94 Z28's all came with 150 speedos.

either he had a GM special with 93 parts or that was a 93 Z28 with a 2.73 rear end. making it a DOGGGG

ah i see. like i said i dont research them that much, and although i put the CAI and all that in it he already bought it so im no posative on that, he says its a 94 but i dont know. He purchased it from Al Serra, and along with the 110 speedo, his shift panel (has gear lettering on it) didnt have a first gear slot in it from the factory? it was blocked so the trans could not manually be put into first gear? I dont know if this was a 93 by chance or early 94 it just seemed weird that this Z was like that, and none of the others I have rode in/ worked on have been this way

seems like a 93, dont quote me but ive heard something about them having a terrible transmission that robbed it of major horsepower to the wheels or something

yeah like i said im not posative, but for a camaro it does feel kinda like a dog, ive driven it a few times, and it just seems like it should have more balls than a 4 door family car

Negative sir....it all comes down to wether or not they got z rated tires....if you got 2.73 gears then the car came with a 115 speedo BUT if you got 2.73 gears and z rated tires then you got the 150...i believe this is how it worked....its been a while since ive read on it...ill go back and double check.

OP what kind of tires on the car? Also gears if you know? Auto or 6 speed? im assuming auto since you were talking about the "1"

Im not sure on the gearing dont quote me but i believe theyre 2.73s and the tires from the factory were not z-rated he did tell me that, he now was a set of z06 rims on it, and it is an automatic

i did some checkin around....an auto wiht 2.73's and NON z rated tires will top out around 110ish....had the car been ordered with z rated tires he would have the 150 speedo and the 150ish limiter..

Now...if the car had the 6 speed depending on which 6 speed(M28) the car can come with 2.73's and the the NON z rated tires with a 115 speedo OR z rated tires and 150 speedo if desired.
BUT if it had the other 6 speed (m29) then it got 3.23's to compensate for the different gears WITH z rated tires...not an option..z rated tires were standard with 3.23's...came with a 150 speedo also.
i got some of this info form camaroz28.com as well as my camaro book
    Hope that helps you out

dam sorry i couldn't answer this earlier but yeah lt1 cars with 2.73 and non z rated tires top out at 110. i had a convertible 94 Z28 and it had this problem. if ur buddy doesn't do only highway driving tell him to find a 6 speed 3.42 rear or he would have to change his gears and get a 3 series carrier and install 3.42 gears then tune then change the shift points and rear gear ration on the computer. trust me it will be a day and night difference and it wont be to bad on the highway neither. also a magnaflow catback would help him out as well since u mentioned the cat has been deleted. my last and fastest fbody was this 97 WS.6
