stock is around 15 i think????
well if its down in the 10 range, your know your knocking, and if thats all you got, yea you could do it that way. it wont be as accurate, but its something

here is one of my scans. you can see when it knocks how the sprak goes down. if your scaner can read fast enough you should get a good idea.
so yes i could read knock of just my timing advance at wot

Alright, cool. A long time ago before headers, ported blower and all the other stuff i was seeing 10* at WOT on the 3.4 so i was probably knocking quite a bit then. Ill have to check again now.
