I have a set of 05 Chrome GT rims on my 01 GT. The front tires keep going flat. Someone was telling me he heard this is a problem with these rims. Almost like whatever they put on the roads to salt them eat away at the rims in time. Has anyone heard of this? I need to put new tires on them but don't want to waste my time if the rims are bad. I really like the look of them though....

My 04 rims are different then yours but they did leak around the rims. Like you I had trouble with the fronts. I found the leaks by doing the old soappy water test on the tire, valve stems and rims. After I found they were leaking at the beads on the sides of the rims. I had a local garage remove the tires from the rims. He then cleaned up the bead areas on the side of the rims because they were built up with some flakey material. Then he coated the inside of the bead area on the rim with some grey like paint or sealer and I havent had any trouble since. A good tire changer will no what to look for if you tell him they are leaking around the beads.

    Easy fix.

Basically the factory coating or chrome spray on crap will start its known corrosion and then start to leak.

You gotta take the tire off and take a wire wheel to inside edge where the bead of the tire sits and clean it up. Then take some bead sealer and re-install the tires, I see this kinda stuff day in and day out at work.

mostly all chrome rims leak once they get older my special edition ones did, what i did to fix it was get some high temp RTV, take the tire off the rim (and valve steam if you want) put the silicon around the rim where the tire seals let it dry then put the tire back on. they also sell stuff too but i forget what its called, that's what i did and it held up great.

Yeah, painted rims no problem. Chrome rims, constant headache up here in road salt country. The clean and seal the bead routine doesn't seem to last too long. But had a Nissan Xterra done and it seems to be holding. Maybe new formulas for bead sealer. My 05 GT painted rims at 98K miles are not leaking.

Surprised you are getting that in NC. Started dealing with this back in the 90s when alloy rims started coming from the factory. Takes a few years of exposure to road salt then it starts.
