Was noisey now runs poorly

I was on a road trip started with a ticking sound then got louder, after driving two more hours the ticking went away so I assumed the problem was not valve train related, Is it possible I have something wrong in the valve train yet the valve train is now very quiet. At this time engine is quiet I have a check engine light on engine runs rough, engine runs smoother with coil 1/4 disconnected, have changed ICM and 1/4 coil.

And can you get the code number so we know what the car is saying.

its always a good idea to get a statement from the car when possible

I would love to pull the codes, perhaps I'm just being cheap as I'm 60 miles to the nearest shop and they charge $250 for a tow. If I had a problem with a rocker or lifter would I always hear noise?
