Serpentine Belt Trouble

I'm replacing the alternator on my 98 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP and having problems releasing the tension on the belt. I have found the tension pulley but not sure where the bolt is to replace. Thanks to anyone that can help. This is also my first time to post to this forum and will highly recommend the site. Thanks again.

I'm not sure here, but it sounds like you're thinking of the older style tensionsers where you loosen a bolt and slide it to relieve tension on the belt. These are spring loaded tensioners, you just put a breaker bar on the bolt in the middle of the tensioner pulley and turn it to relieve the tension.

Using the picture I posted, you want to put a 15mm socket or wrench on the bolt in the center of the rear most pulley #3. This sits just below the alternator. Then you want to push towards the rear of the car. This bolt is left handed thread, so it may seem odd. But this will release the tension on the tensioner and allow you to remove the belt.
