rattling sound from behind dash

There is a muffled rattling sound from behind the dash. I'll post a sound clip when I can. RPM and throttle does not affect it as far as I can notice. It's constant and not erratic. As far as I know it's coming from right in front of me. Sometimes it isn't there when just starting out, but it always comes back after driving a bit. Could it be the exhaust piping right before the cat rattling after heating and expanding?:th_lipssealed2:
 


I'd start with something simple like taking that plastic bezzel off that wraps around the entire dash and see if it goes away. Those things like to make noise.
 
Okay so I tried the dash and it's definitely in the engine bay. I've stuck my head near the back of the engine bay and it seems to be coming from there. The videos I'm taking can't really get a good sound file of the noise due to background sounds and just crappy mic quality. Closer to driver's side. I'd say around below the valve cover is where the sound is greatest (in terms of how 'deep' down in there it is), but that could just be weird acoustics. It's like a rattley tick, like the sound a bicycle makes when it's coasting.
