Junkyard top swap

Judging by the fact that it's pretty difficult to even find any grand prods in a junkyard I know this is a long shot. But if I had a miracle and were to locate a gtp with low enough miles that still had workng components.... Is it possible that I could get the parts for a top swap. I probably wouldn't even do it for a while it's just a thought in my head. But if I could find the parts and it is possible I might as well put together a kit and work from there. Let me know what you guys think if it's possible or if modified parts are needed. Also is it possible that I could take certain parts out of the HD tranny to do the HD upgrade to my non HD similar to the zzp kit. Thanks, mat

there is a user or two on here selling a top swap... but Morad I think wants 600 bucks for a GUARANTEED set of parts.

Ya I know that would be a much better idea which eventually I might do but where I'm not really concentrating on it and I'm also 16 I'd rather not spend 600 haha. Thanks for the amazingly fast reply

If you dont want to spend the $600 for parts, then dont top swap your car, it will cost you a lot more than that in the long run.

are you saying it will cost more in the long run as if i go for cheap parts? or will it cost more in the long run no matter what?

if you put money into your motor, youll break other things. dont expect to top swap it and be done buying parts or fixing things.

ok so basically if i do it myself i will break other things and cost extra, if i take it to a shop it will cost something rediculous so either way it isnt gonna be like 300 bucks...

oh ya and when you say break other things do you mean like as in the transmission? or other engine parts running it? or engine parts doing the swap?

Lets go down my list then...

Top swap

Led to headers

led to welding them

led to them cracking

Now i need new headers

S/C i bought needed needle bearings and a S/C coupler.

Hmm I think I might still be willing haha. I was actually considering headers first... As for the coupler and bearings that has to do with making sure I get a good one. How much were those anyway?

$40-50 shipped for the coupler ( canada)

$10 for fluid that time,

$10 for fluid the time I took it apart for the needle bearings.

$60 shipped for the bearings, $20 for labour, $10 for TB gasket, $20 for S/C gasket, $2 for injector o-rings.

Coupler is an easy check, turn the pulley one way then the other, if theres play then your coupler is in need of replacing.

Bearings, if you move the thing and hear grinding.

my route:

top swap: spun bearing (my fault)
new motor with top swap: plethora of parts that i bought to make the car fast
parts to make car fast: demolished transmission
new transmission: break transmission again
broken transmission: sold car

all in all, i spend around $12k+ on the car and made $1000 back when i sold it. have fun.

So I feel the only thing that really worries me is the tranny which I expected. That's why I was asking if I could just get the parts to upgrade to the HD

just have some extra money in case something does happen, and if you dnt beat on it every day not everything will break...if you add power to the car you add the risk of something breaking

Ok so if I do the regular top swap, correctly, then I should be fine other than my trans if I go WOT every second

its not that, its moreso epic downshifts and hammering the gas instead of rolling into it as well as burnouts and heavy throttle around corners.

HD trans = hd differential which will still shred just as readily so just dont beat on it.
