Howdy Folks

Just picked up an '04 Grand Prix GT with 194000 miles on the clock...The car is in nearly excellent condition...but does have some issues. I bought this caar from a mechanic neighbor of mine who has worked/serviced it since it was new so the history of the car is well known. The car has been taken care of and it shows...
One question though...I noticed at hwy cruising @ 70 mph the tach only registers 2000 rpms...my mechanic swears this is normal and why this engine is supposed to get 30mpg on the hwy...is there any truth in this ???
Other than that i am reallly happy with this car and I'm told there are no issues to deal with...between my neighbor and this forum i should have things well in hand...looking forward to reading and learning more about this car.:th_biggrin2:

Completely normal for the cruising rpm. 30mpg really depends on the driver etc. It is very common for most to see 25-28mpg

Well that's awesome.. I could have sworn it was way off..every other car I've owned it was 3000 RPMs at 70...so that made me do a double take...;-)

Actually one of my previous cars was aVolvo 960 wagon with an inline 6 cyl motor and it was close to 3000 rpms at 70 mph

Regardless this vehicle is quite quick and it handles well...all options work as they should with the exception of the 2 rear windows... but they are up.
Also have noticed that I have to give it some gas when starting and timing it so that the engine doesn't stall..the rpms come down to near zero but then jump up to abt 1000 rpms at idle after that the car idles fine and never stalls. My OEM headlamps were clouded over but a kit of Wipe New from Wally World cured the foginess..worth the 20 bucks...;-)

Pull your throttle body off and clean it spotless.
Thanks...Car has sat for some time before I bought it so i thought it was old gas inr throttle body and a tank of ethanol free has improved things but it still wont start without giving it some gas... My mechanic buddy said pretty much what you've said about cleaning out the TB...this weekend...:th_thumb-up:

I guess I'm not surprised that my Iissues are common...just good to hear some explanations that corroborate what I've have already heard. Thanks for your thoughts and comments...I can't believe they're still making cars with egr valves....I had a 87 Buick Grand National that when I disconnected the egr valve...ran liked a bat out ta hell...well it already was but it was even more so...don't suppose anyone does that these days...
