Hear/See Spinning, clunking, no motion

I have a 1999 GTP with a previously rebuilt transmission (from a shop I really trust). I have about 100K since the rebuild (275K total), so it could be dead - but I suspect it's not. I had just got the car back from the body shop and I noticed a slight "buzz" in the drive train that was new. I drove it with the "buzz" for 2 days trying to get a fix on the source. However, it gave out before I could isolate the issue. Had to stop at a light. Took off and there was a clunk, then it lost forward momentum. After some whirring, I managed to get it off the road, but the speedo indicated about 50 when I was actually doing 5 mph tops. I suspect the body shop guys took it out for a little fun after the rocker panels were repaired, and perhaps they hit the gas a little too hard - but I can't prove it.

I know the speed sensor is in the tail piece of the tranny. This is another reason I believe the tranny is still spinning. I think possibly the CV joint has taken a dump and or something in the tailpiece has let go, but my (new) repair shop seems to believe that I will need a complete tranny rebuild or a unit from a boneyard. (Visions of dollar bills dance in their heads!)

Does anybody on here have experience with this kind of drivetrain failure? I would like to have more ammunition when I talk to the shop guy tomorrow. $100 for a new axle assembly sounds a lot better than $1200+ for a rebuild!

I thank any and everyone who has any insight to offer. Am I completely off-base here?

Scottydoggs;

It's in the shop now, but I remember that the day it happened, it would go into neutral, but no forward motion in any gear. Lots of noise, though. I don't remember trying reverse.

if it is the forward band you may as well have it rebuilt, cause the band is just that deep.

if the shop drops the pan they may find the broken tab in the pan. from the pan they can see the tab if its not broken.

When I snapped my axle it made hella noise and went no where, made noise in every dam gear even park
