Bought my 99 GTP back in 09 off a guy on Craigslist for $2300. Odometer had 144k on it. Seemed like a deal, so I took it home. Had some body damage that someone hastily fixed but otherwise seemed alright. 160k the transmission failed and I had it rebuilt. Various other issues such as rack and pinion replacement, front wheel hubs, cv axles, fuel pump, so on. Nothing major except the transmission. Figured it was just typical of a car approaching 200k. 190k the odometer dropped the 100 thousandth number from 1 to 2. Seemed odd, figured it was just glitch. Others on the forum remarked it was probably rolled back, I figured it would hit 299k and then just keep the 2 and straighten itself out. Now that I'm at 299k I see the 3 creeping up. I ran a vinaudit.com report because it seemed like a cheap alternative to carfax, and it didn't tell me ****. Bit the bullet and dropped 39.99 on a carfax and I saw that the last recorded mileage was 277k before I bought it and it was recorded as a total loss from a collision by an insurance company.

On one hand it sucks that I got scammed, on the other I've managed to extend the life of it well beyond what seems possible. Life lesson I guess. I won't buy another used car without seeing the vehicle history from carfax.

That is very odd. The registering state should have flagged that as an issue or your insurance agent should have. A total loss is typically not easy to sell unless the title is noted as such. Most states require a car to have a salvage or rebuilt title after a loss like that.

As for carfax, keep in mind that most issues are not reported and carfax has no record. I had a bonneville, first time I went into the drivers door I became aware that the door had been replaced. No report whatsoever on carfax. Many many things are never reported. I'd trust my instinct before carfax personally.
I drink..so consider that when reading my posts.

That's actually not odd at all, and doesn't fall on the DMV. I checked and Florida has an odometer exeption for vehicles which are 10 years or older. This means that after 10 years, the odometer readings are no longer significant. I believe a lot of states have this exemption. This is a buyer beware kind of thing for anyone who is looking to purchase a vehicle 10 years old or older.

It's good to see that you're around what 450k miles on a 99. That's not bad at all.

I hope my car makes it to 299,xxx. I looked at a Honda Civic for a friend that said it had a clean carfax report, only to find the car had been rear-ended and the damage and repair hidden, but visible by looking under the carpet in the trunk, it also appeared to have been in a flood, none which was indicated on carfax.

I'm pretty sure that it's just been rolled back the 100000. It's less than 1000 miles from 300k even now.

the province i'm in has set up a program to deal with this. the mileage is updated by the ministry at each plate renewal. a $20 used vehicle package must be bought to transfer the car. this document lists every previous owner and mileage and date at each transfer, the status of the vehicle ie. active, rebuilt, write off etc, bill of sale, lein information, wholesale and retail value of the car.
