It's funny how most view a Honda/Toyota as reliable. They aren't really anymore reliable than our cars. Reality is..if you follow their maintenance schedule, the car is in the shop too often for my tastes. And it's around $500 each time. By the time the car hits 200K ... it's nearly an all new drivetrain based on maintenance.
On the other hand...you can find many 3800 based cars that were driven off the showroom and barely got maintained that went into the 200K's.
If you rebuild and that cost me 600 minus pistons and new cams everything else new you will appreciate it so much more. It will be crisp and you will know whats been done or what hasnt been done to it. Im half asian and alot of my family drive civic si with swaps integra with swaps no real difference in quality IMO. Get new rings touch hone cylinder walls, new rbs, new mb, oil pump and gaskets and aluminum coolant elbows, paint your block whatever ricer color you want lol jk and maybe do flexplate and mounts. Drive it to the ******* wheels fall off lol good luck
Doing that will insure a short lived motor^^^
Will need to be line bored and junk to keep everything in line
My 1991 Grand prix has had only one minor electrical issue and it's 20+ years old. I was easily able to fix it my self. When I was into 97-03 GTPs. I never had a problem with those either. Granted I was buying those new at the time. I drove one 97 right up to 120k and never had one issue. I drove that car hard.
This is how I feel I would rather have to worry about the little quirks of our pontiacs and chryslers than be run over by a honda due to faulty parking brakes or have unintended acceleration with a toyota my aunt had a 2003 honda pilot and the whole undercarriage rusted out yet my moms 97 grand prix was still running strong as she dumped money into her pilot needless to say she got it back from the shop and purchased a brand new town and country limited and loves but most likely you are having this problem because sadly maybe your car was a friday build but all companies have them or maybe the previous owner didnt take good care of your car
Wow 193k here and the only electrical issue I've had was I had to replace my Alternator... I know that's terrible right!
Since owning my car for the past 6 years I can say it has been extremely reliable. Sure I've had issues, but nothing too serious... Except for the 4 different front wheel bearings I've been through. Other than that it was some dash lights, the heated seat, cruise control, HUD starting to flicker, etc. The motor itself however has been rock solid. Seriously runs better than it did 6 years ago at 41k miles. Has 112K now.
So I guess I am the oddball as my 4t60 has outlasted 2 of these engines already.
They were. Oil changed every 3,000 miles, never was driven long with a check engine light on etc and weren't run hard either as that would have killed the tranny. It is a 97 though....
