GXP, GTP, GT, etc are trim levels, not sub-models. The reason Pontiac changed ALL the nameplates is because the average person associates Grand Prix, Grand Am, Sunfire, etc with "pile of dog sh*t cars". Remember, we may tolerate what these cars put us through as enthusiasts, but your average consumer is NOT going to have any of that. The idea was to start with a fresh, clean slate for Pontiac so that these better cars weren't attached to that stigma, all while trying to give the cars a bit of European flare (thus the numbered nameplates).
doesnt matter, g6 is still a piece of **** and people know it.
For the same reason so many people assume ALL GPs come with superchargers, even the Gen 5s (pre-'97s). The average consumer is not familiar with most trim level acronyms, so it hurts nothing to keep the old trim level letters for the new nameplates. If anything, it helps keep an association for the enthusiasts.
Except they also came in a V6. Remember the '00 concept car was also called a Grand Prix G8?
