I recently took my 98 gtp into the local pontiac dealership for a recall notice i recieved in the mail in my case Boulevard Buick Pontiac GMC on cherry ave. in long beach. At first my impression was good, the service people seemed knowledgeable and helpful. They even threw in a free car wash. BUT after having my car for 4 hours (an hour longer than they told me they would have it) I get a phone call saying that the lower intake gasket is leaking. $845.00 The Engine Oil Pan gasket is leaking: $688.00 and the power stearing pump is leaking $391.00. Now my car is 11 years old and has 114,000 miles. But she runs like a champ and I try to keep it that way. I check my fluids regularly and look underneathe for leaks. I have NEVER seen any evidence of these leaks until I took it in for the recall, at this point im convinced the dealership is a. trying to scam people, or b. they just f#*ked my car up and are trying to cover their a**es.
The purpose of my writing this is to: 1 warn others that my have recieved a recall notice but have yet to take in there car. 2 Gather information from others who have, especially is anyone has had work done in so cal. 3 I lack the mechanical knoledge to know if damage could be done while replacing parts for the recall, A valve cover gasket is what they seem to have replaced If anyone has knows anything or has any ideas please let me know.

PS It looks like im gonna be needing how to write ups on replacing Intake Gasket, Oil Pan Gasket and how to stop a power stearing fluid leak. Thanks Guys good luck.

Those are all known things to happen to the 3800. I don't doubt it's leaking.

I would look at that stuff yourself power steering maybe leaking on a hose or something, replace it, its easy enough.

As for the oil pan gasket, if it ain't dripping, don't worry about it. Alittle seepage won't hurt anything.

As for the LIM, $845? Glad I wasn't told that, I would of probably decked the guy in his face right there! You can do that procedure yourself for under $100.

If you can't do the work yourself, get a few other opinions elsewhere, NOT A DEALER, THEY WANNA SCREW YOU.

    No wonder I hate dealers....

It's a simple case of the tech noticing stuff and suggesting an upsell. They probably get commission or the hours for fixing the stuff.

Your car is likely leaking and has been for quite some time.

LIM frequently shows as fluid on the inteka manifold. Pooling in the lower seections

    Oil pan gasket...show me one that doesn't seep...and I'll admit about 1 in a 100 is dry.

    PS.. probably a moist hose.

If you started off with a thorough engine cleaning, you'll find the origins of the leaks and be able to fix them for much less. Keep in mind that dealers use OE parts and they have books on what amount of time to charge a customer. That's where their prices come from.
I drink..so consider that when reading my posts.

You bet your ass if i work at a dealership im upselling... more money for the tech. Those are outrageous prices, but seeing how i fix everything myself for just the cost of parts, i see it differently.

Yup, gary lang did mine in an hour. There is NO reason they should've had your car for four hours for this. And those prices are ridiculous. Take it to a good shop or do it yourself.

they dont change the front valve cover grommets.

They don't change the rear valve cover gasket/grommets.

Both leak oil onto the manifolds after a while.

Best to just do it yourself.

They also dont check the o-rings on the fuel rail quick disconnects.

If you move that around and it leaks, you need to replace the o ring or the entire connector.

And if you own a GT they only change the spark plug retainers.

which doesnt do anything about your leaky valve cover gaskets or fuel rail disconnects.

and it comes out of no where, i put ported exhaust manifolds on my car and the stockers looked fine, then about 6-7 months later i get headers and the back manifold was covered in oil. so aluminum valve covers and new gaskets majically showed up and fixed my little issue

Yeah I work at a gm dealership. I see it all the time and have done the recalls. The recall for the gt is one you could laugh at. Still are better off just doing it yourself and fixing the actual problem.
