    AAAHHGG!!!

my and my girlfriend bought each others the new ipod touch for christmas. i love it, it is an awesome electronic item.

recently, they released new software for it with added applications. all ipods produced after january 08 have the new software. so where does that leave me?? well, the new software will come with a price tag of $19.99.

now its not that i dont have $20, i just feel like, for the money i paid for this thing, software updates should be free.

ugh, this type of **** just pisses me off, "screw that man who pays our bills".

a few companies operate that way (ever buy a tom tom gps? the maps suck and are $50 for one with I10 in Mobile) I am not an ipod fan to start of with though, never made sense to me when I can use my cheap mp3 player to play music, with a card I can take out and put in my pda, laptop or desktop computer and have whatever I want on it for under $100

How is the user interface with that cheap mp3 player? Does it have the options of an ipod? Does it have the ability to do software updates??

In fact, you need to update your iTunes software since according to the iTouch manual, you should get downloads for free. On Friday is when Apple released the new update.

I don't need an interface, drag and drop works fine, or real player, or even windows media player does the trick, and I don't have the virus that is itunes (it has been debated by many, but it fits the definition of a virus and you can't get away from it I had to format a hard drive to get it to uninstall before)

A virus in iTunes?? Thats a new one. If thats the case, theres a virus in Steam that many people use to play CS and other fun online games. Im sure there are "viruses" in plenty of software.

It doesnt matter what you want or can use. iPod is simple, easy to use, and pretty much raises the bar everytime a new one comes out. I hate arguing apple VS everything else when it comes to MP3 players. Apple has to be doing something right if it has been dominant for over 7 years in the MP3 world. Now they even moved to the phone (which I have) and it is one of if not the most useful devices I own.

Back to the topic at hand. No. You dont need to pay to update your iTouch. Upgrade iTunes and then that will update your touch. I had to do my phone the exact same way. I kinda wish I didnt since I wanna jailbreak it and make it even more useful that way I can post about how awsomeness it is and people will spam the thread about how gay apple is. LOL.

I have to side with archemedes here. I didnt need an interface. I dont even have the 1Gb MP3 player I have filled up (about 75%) and its more music than I could listen to at any point in the day or week. I listen to the thing MAYBE an hour a day at work, primarily during lunch.

While the interface isnt a touch screen, I can play all the music, play by artist, genre, album, etc. Its got a built in FM tuner, which I really havent used but its there. Its probably about the size of a Compact Flash card, runs absolutely forever on a charge. I can listen to it throughout the week without having to charge it up. And the sound it just simply unbeatable. To top it off, I got both me and the wife one for well under $100. I could have bought the 2Gb version, but heck the 1Gb holds more than I can listen to as it is let alone trying to fill up a 40Gb, 60Gb or more MP3 player.

I just simply looked at how I thought I would use one (never owned a MP3 player until Christmas) and just decided that the Apple MP3 players were WAY more than I would ever use. Furthermore I have a 120Gb USB portable HDD that I use everyday at work and home that I can keep any MP3's on and play through the PC when I get some down time outside of lunch. And every MP3 I own packed on that hard drive only totals up to less than 15Gb.

the ipod touch doesnt get the free update. i think some of it has to do with the fact that your iphone is something you have a contract on, so you get updates, firmwares, etc. the touch is a buy-once item. the "firmware" update that costs $20 is essentially just the 4 add on productivity aps. it's kinda a lame way to do business, but it's how they're doing it, and people will pay it.

as for using an ipod vs other mp3's, it depends on what you expect out of the device. I had a creative mp3 player to start with (nomad jukebox, with upgraded 10 gb HD) it was nice enough, but it was big, and didnt integrate well with other systems. I got a 5.5 gen 30 gb for christmas last year, and i really like it. I wanted the ipod because of it's versatility and integratability. I have a HU in my grand prix that will control the ipod, so no messing with the controls on the ipod or what not when driving. i also have a dock integrated with my home stereo/tv that lets me navigate the ipod on the tv screen, via remote. even have a few movies stored on it, for traveliing (that's where the size comes in handy storage wise) i dont have but about 10 GB of music on it, but that's most everything i own, in cd or greater MP3 quality. In all, it really boils down to what your comfortable with. could i use one of the more generic mp3's ? yeah. but ALOT of mainstream america, that isnt technically minded will find the ipod easier to manage and get the most out of. Windows media player is fine for those of us that can handle a little work, but it's just not as streamlined as itunes.

the ironic part is that now both my wife and i have ipods.... i hate mac computers, really. --but if/when the iphone shows up on Verizon's network, i'll have a hard time not getting one, and will likely cave in to it

i did get new software for it, went from 1.1.1 to 1.3.1

its the apps that you have to pay for. truly gay

the girlfriend bought it, she had $30 itunes dollars laying around, the notepad is the only thing i want, and the ability to move the icons around. the maps is a scaled down version of google maps, which i never use. stocks, not something i cant get from safari. and email, again i can get it from safari

im disappointed with the update, cause none of the new apps can be flipped on their sides. i can only type with the thing on its side, fat thumbs, so i would end up on the internet for mail anyways. i just wouldnt use the notepad simply because i could not type it out.

apple wont be getting my money this time, they named it the january update, to me that means there will be more. **** me

The apps might cost money, but firmware should be free. The changing of the home screen is part of the firmware.

My phone came with notepad. I use it alot.

No. It stays the same way. Its still useful though. Ive made grocery lists, car part lists, christmas lists.

I read on gizmodo that you are correct. They want you to pay for the extra apps. However, I still do believe the firmware should be free. Even my old non color ipod got free firmware.

All you have is 15GB of music? Wow. I have an external 500gb drive i store all mine on and I have like 115GB last I checked and still don't have all the music i want. I like the Ipod and my Clarion has an interface built into it if i buy the 100.00 adapter to make it work. I just don't use mine enough. I have an mp3/cd player. I just put what i want on disk.

BTW you can drag and drop with Itunes too.

Well I would have more but the RIAA go serious about things

So I actually started going and downloading them from subscription sites or buying songs individually. Though most (probably 80%) of what I would download was older music that gets virtually no air time anymore. Prior to all that I got tired of all the commercials on regular radio, I then went to XM and they too started having a ton of commercials, way way more than what should be if Im paying to listen to the radio, so I dropped them and went back to the file shares and stuck with that until I got concerns about RIAA and their tactics.

Arent you able to customize your home page now?

Also FWIW, I only have about 4 gigs of music. I need more but I only keep what I like. Im not a "I need the whole album" type of person.

Most of mine are albums. I have an Itunes account. I just buy what i can't find elsewhere and mainly buy TV shows that i miss. I also have Sirius. 10X's better than XM. Alot less commercials. The only time i hear commercials on it is on the talk channels.

Never saw the need to have 80g's of music on a mp3 player or spend a lot of money on one, I only have a Sansa 1g mp3 player so I could listen to music while at the gym then got the Pioneer Inno for XM and gave the Sansa to my wife. There are no commercials on the music channels on XM except for the 3 or 4 channels that are owned by Clear Channel that XM got screwed over with. XM and Sirius have station ID's on the music channels that some people refer to as commercials.

Thats cool. I've been tempted to get a portable sat. radio. How is the reception inside the gym though? I can never get reception with my car unit in my house.
