A few years ago a buddy told me about an ad he saw saying that the Philly elevator union was accepting applications for apprentices. It sounded like a good opportunity so we decided to go down and check it out. We get there, stand in line for an hour, filled out applications, listened to their spiel about how great unions are and then finally take the assessment test.

When the last person handed in his test, a union rep got up and said to everyone there "Thank you guys for taking the time to come in today, we really appreciate it. Unfortunately, we won't be taking on any apprentices at this time due to the unemployed journeymen already on the bench." Everyone who took the test got up, cursing and *****ing at the union guys, and walked out lol.

To 04lss, keep applying something will eventually work out for you.

union stuff always works on a list. the longer you wait the closer to you get to a job as the older guys retire. it's always been that way and always will be that way.

    that being said unions suck.

The only positive about unions is they protect workers, but the negative side of that positive is they protect all workers, even bad workers.

If unions would "cut the fat", so to speak, and stop OVERPAYING people and stop protecting bad workers just because they are union, then they would look a lot better in many people's eyes.

Hell unions are why automakers went broke. Unions are why the steel industry moved overseas, etc

Scariest thread ever. I get jobs by waking up to a guy and asking if they need any help. At least thats how it used to be for me. I better stay put. So- is this re-tire thing when a old guy gets a set of free tires after 20 years or something? How do onions protect workers? Work is hard, lol.

i don't need to be in the industry for the same amount of years as most people to get the same pay, benefits, and recognition because i'm better than most people that have been doing it for longer than me.

that's why unions suck. advancement is purely based on time and if you figure out a way around it everyone cuts you down for it.

but this is also why i have a degree and work for a privately held company. i may not get a pension when i retire, but i'm paying into my own pension via profit sharing and purely making more money than people that have been in other jobs the same time frame as me. suck it.

    Nice Work

On a separate note, Our country was founded on the idea of a Union, so sometimes they are good, but like people, unions can be used for good or bad. I think getting paid the same as someone that has been doing the job for a long time is dumb, it gives no incentive for workers to better themselves or get better at the job being performed. In my previous vocation, we had a union, and it was a good one. There were different levels of pay, so having time at the work site helped, and there was incentive for improvement. The union also had a policy that if you messed up and it wasn't in the best interest of the collective for the union to step in, then you were out of luck. With all this being said, a good management negates the need for a union.
