2006 Pontiac Grand Prix starts and dies unless given gas
Update a few days later. I replaced the spark plugs and wires, no change. replaced the purge valve under the hood and it started right away the rest of the day, but right back to starting and dying right away the next morning. I ordered a new valve canister and a new gas cap for fun and that should be in the mailbox tomorrow. In the meantime, the car has gone from "start and die" to a "crank no start". I then replaced the air filter (which was clogged more than I have ever seen) and wiped out what i could reach out of the throttle body while I was in there. I tried using starting fluid and still a "crank no start". Today I bench tested the fuel pump relay and it was clicking just fine and getting power but the case of it was burnt looking so I replaced it anyways. Still a "crank no start" so then I went back to my very first idea in the spark system where I started before my Fixd OBD gave me the P0446 code. I hooked my Grand Prix up to my trucks jumper cables. I was sitting there in the Grand Prix with the key turned to on while my dash kept blinking "battery saver active" and "charging system failure" and while I was on my phone looking up these dashboard readings all of a sudden WOOSH... smoke was coming from the motor and I immediately disconnected the jumper cables. That's when I noticed one of the coil packs melted from the corner and cracked right down the middle. Next will be replacing all of the coil packs and I will update for future readers then.
