figured out why my motor blew.
PUROLATOR oil filters FTL...so i bought all cheap fluids and oil filter during motor install just in case there was something wrong with the motor and i had to exchange it. plan was to drive it until 2000 or so miles. well the gasket on the oil filter blew out, low oil light never came on and oil pressure light didnt come on til it was too late. just my luck :th_angry-cussing:
Re: figured out why my motor blew.
This is why you get a mechanical oil pressure gauge.
Re: figured out why my motor blew.
Thats some crazy ****.
I'm with mini
Re: figured out why i "thought" my motor blew.
yea i plan too... and good news is the motor at idle sounds fine... i got a new oil filter and the gasket blew out again after 10 secs of idle.... any ideas whats causing it to blow gaskets..were planning on changing out oil sending unit tomorrow. i went on assumptions when i thought a rod punched through oil pan... didnt investigate it to well after it happened.
Re: figured out why my motor blew.
SO wait...the blown up car didn't blow up?
Re: figured out why my motor blew.
Eh, i would still get a replacement motor, that one is probably screwed now.
Re: figured out why my motor blew.
no its not blown... when all this happened it was at idle in my driveway warming up... i wasnt out driving at WOT with no oil... i looked under car that morning and it looked like it was pouring from oil pan... which it was just getting blown all over the oil pan and dripping from there... like i said we had it cranked for 10 seconds maybe more tonight and it sounded fine... then it blew out another oil filter gasket. im guessing something is clogged up somewhere and pressure is building up?
Re: figured out why my motor blew.
Re: figured out why my motor blew.
ok maybe i didnt explain to well... me and buddy went out tonight and checked things out... first time since i thought the motor blew... we noticed the oil filter was covered in oil and pulled it off... the gasket had blown out... so we get to thinkin maybe the motor is ok... get a new oil filter and oil... dipstick was dry, so we put 5 quarts in and a new oil filter... cranked it up, ran for 10 seconds then blew another gasket on filter
Re: figured out why my motor blew.
Is it the pure one filters or white purolator classic? did you try a delco pf47 or pf52 to see if it happens again? I personally love the pure one filters and ask since your 1st post made it seem like the filters suck.
Re: figured out why my motor blew.
soulds like oil pressure is way to high or something along those lines
Re: figured out why my motor blew.
you make sure a gasket did not come off and remain on the oil filter housing?
Re: figured out why my motor blew.
yea we checked that first...im at a loss unless something in the filter housing isnt flowing right... bout to go get the original off old motor and see what that does.
Re: figured out why my motor blew.
Seen it happen before at the dealership I worked at. It would run for 10 to 15 seconds till the pressure built up and blow it out over and over again.
If I remember correctly the pump was basicaly stuck wide open or something along those lines.
Another tech was working that job in the bay next to me. It actually sprayed the bay on the other side of mine as well.
Re: figured out why my motor blew.
that sucks if thats my problem... were bout to switch out filter housing and see if that fixes problem... were thinking that lil plunger and spring is hanging up...
Re: figured out why my motor blew.
Thats kinda what i was thinking was that spring/plunger deal cause isnt that a bypass for the pressure into the filter
Atleast the engine isnt done for
Re: figured out why my motor blew.
On the 3800, the bypass is in the block, not in the filter.
Re: figured out why my motor blew.
well we swapped out filter housing, threw on a mobil 1 filter, cranked it up.. sounds fine at idle, filter gasket didnt blow out... 3-4k rpm rod starts knocking pretty good. At least i can drive it to the junkyard to get the motor swapped out now :) would be crazy if by chance i bought 2 bad oil filters for the gasket to blow out twice.
Re: figured out why my motor blew.
Once a rod knocks...it doesn't go away...this thread didn't make a lot of sense
Re: figured out why my motor blew.
ok let me start from the beginning... we swapped out the original blown motor. Put in the other one and the car ran good for a week.. i noticed a slight knock at the drive thru last week sometime, i got the car home oil level was fine. i parked it for the night got up the next morning to go get my other car from my friends shop down the road. within a few seconds of me cranking the car it started knocking really hard to the point of it almost stalling... i killed power and assumed motor was shot. there was a ton of oil coming from underneath.. well the plan was to drop the car off at the junkyard tomorrow.. so over the weekend we jacked it up in the driveway and got a good look at it and the oil was coming from the oil filter housing... took oil filter off and the gasket was blown out... put on another filter, added oil to fill line. cranked the car up and it blew the gasket on the new filter out within a few seconds..today we swapped oil filter housing off old motor onto this one with a mobil 1 filter cranked it up and it didnt blow the gasket on this one... car idles fine with no knock, get into the 3-4 k rpm range and it goes to knocking pretty bad. sorry if i didnt explain well enough.. im clueless as to what caused all this.. both filters that the gasket blew out on were tight and werent double gasketed.
