I have a 94 Gran Prix--when in gear it rattles like a chain is flopping around. Are these built like transfer cases? The tranny shifts and performs just like expected. The noise seems to come from low and in the back of the tranny by where the shafts connect to it.--Please help..........Roger-- I believe it is a four speed I have L,1,2,3, and OD

Hi Roger, this is a problem found primarily up until around late 95/early 96 as a few revisions were made to the forward roller clutch. It makes "marbles in a coffee can" type of sound when failing and means a rebuild to gain access. Something else that could be causing your noise is a drive shell that is badly worn in the spline area on the ends which is another pretty common weak point on the models until the 96 model year-which recieved a hardened shell. These transmissions do use a chain similar to what is used in a transfer case but they are much narrower. A badly worn chain will flop around and smack the case in a few spots and can also cause noise. There really isnt much you are going to be able to do without tearing into the trans so it is really a matter of how deep you want to dig into it.

Thanks for the reply.I was hoping you'd answer. And I figured the tranny had to come out. The next question I have is this.....I have a 91 3.1 motor with a good trans-motor not so good) my Son cut out of a car....will this trans bolt up and run correctly in my 94. I see the mounting bracket will have to be fabricated and I suspect the block/bellhousing mounting will be the same. However I do not know about the electrics etc. I would think there may be more controls on the 94 and possibly this will not work. Thanks again for your time....Roger
