    This just started happening for a few weeks now. 97 gp se w/ 160k on the dash. Start car .put into reverse and car doesn't move. Its like the trans doesn't engage. So I go through all the gears until it grabs. What can be the problem?? The shift cable doesn't seem damaged or loose.

    hope for low fluid...check the level.

    it leak at all?

    Hey Scotty. Thanks for the quick reply. No leaks at all. Fluid level is good. Did my first pan drop not too long ago.

    if its full, add some trans medix, might help. mean time, start saving up for,,,, well i wont say it lol .

    nope, was gonna say tranny, cause no one wants to believe its dead or dying. like theres some simple secret fix. been sown this dirt road two times now. i didnt like it either.

    ive head shop quotes from 1800 to 2400 for rebuilds, thats labor and all.

    or tep has a cheap but better then the local shops for about 1600. your installing that one.

    Or you can try rebuilding it yourself! haha I've rebuilt a few of these transmissions myself, and usually no reverse is either the reverse servo failure, or the reaction drum failure. Unfortunately there is no fix other than to rebuild it for the second option. If everything works fine except reverse, the servo is on the top of the transmission and can be serviced with the removal of the exhaust crossover and the intake. Not that bad to do. Usually the lip seal goes bad causing a loss of reverse. If you have any other issues, it's going to be an internal problem.

    Where are you located? I do cheap rebuilds for those in need if they come to me. Only takes a few hours if no major parts are broken. Most of these transmissions can be rebuilt for $500 in parts. Not that bad to do yourself honestly. I don't claim to be an expert, only another desperate soul who has been there and succeeded at rebuilding a few (and yes, they're still operational).

    I think I explained it completely wrong. So after a long research I came to a conclusion that I have the 4t60 vacuum controlled tranny. My symptoms: When I start the vehicle up..no matter if its a cold start or its been running for a while..it won't budge if I put it reverse or drive right away. If I just let it run for at least a minute or two and then shift into a gear, it will move. Very weird. Other than that..the tranny is flawless.

    I'm not as versed on the vacuum control transmissions, but there's a test for vacuum using a vacuum gauge, I'll see if I can find the test procedure. In the mean time, check for vacuum leaks around the manifold etc. Could be a leaky rubber line that is sealing up when it heats up, or it's an internal transmission seal on it's way out and sealing as things warm up.

    Any transmission shop can do this vacuum test fairly cheaply if you don't want to try it yourself.
