Would it be feasible to remote mount a standard Pc somewhere in the car(probably trunk) And have a screen somewhere on/in the dash, and have the mouse and keyboard tucked into the center console. This to run the tuner program.

I ask this because I have an old PC that is fully capable of running either of the tuners.

I know the basics I would need, AC-Inverter for the computer, extension wires for monitor, keyboard, mouse, tuner.

What else would I really need??

the issue is the hard drives aren't made for the car environment, and are suseptable to damage

True, the environment would be rough, but there was a member on CGP that did something similar to that. He went by the screen name of JEFFSGTP. Ive spoken with him on that because it is a project I will eventually get too because I need a set up like that for storm chasing.

It is really expensive for a big one, but i figured maybe a solid state HD like 8 - 16GB just for the OS and the tuner...

Yeah, the trunk does heat and cool too much, what about a micro atx setup under the center console?

I'm more worried about the vibration, not much clearance and the disc inside spins pretty fast. If you could come up with a suspension it would be feasible. The price of a solid state hd wouldn't be that much less than a dedicated car pc, and more than a decent used laptop

I'd say to check out the mp3car.com site. There are a TON of people there who have done this and lots of good info on it. Might look into a Liliput 7" touch screen then you can get rid of the mouse that will be tough to use in a car.

alternative to the HD issue... there are comanies that make IDE to CF (compact flash) adapters... if you get one of those, and a decent sized CF card, you will have essentially the same results as one of the solid state drives, but at less cost, but you still will have to deal with power down issues. i do agree, look over at mp3car.com there is alot of info there

I was thinking about this when I saw this post too but I figured cost would still be a bit high. I saw some adapters not too long ago that held 4 CF cards. I thought 4 8gb cards would be nice, kinda expensive in relation to what hard drives go for and I still dont think it would be enough to run windows. Too bad the scan tools and tuners out there wont work on linux.

Well that is considerably cheaper than I would have thought. Nice find.

Laptop hard drives are an option as well...designed for mobility.

Yeah, I was thinking about it , and i am not brave enough to leave 600+ dollars worth of indoor computer equipment in my car when it gets -5* outside, My girlfriend's car battery actually froze today, I'll just get a laptop and bring my investment inside when it gets nasty outside
