Has anyone owned a mercury cougar? Looking into buying one and wondering if anyone has had one before and if they have a lot of problem.

What year? Not sure if anyone knows much about them on here, I don't but we just did a motor swap on one at work, probably an early 2000's model. I can't help much but someone who may would want the year.

    The one I'm looking at is a 2002 35th anniversary edition with 155k miles for 1800 dollars. It's the V6 (2.5) Automatic

    Stay away.

Such a cramped engine bay and everything on them is really gay, like the alternator.

The 2.5 is a Mazda engine and yes the bay is cramped.

I'm with ffdp, the alternator is an absolute nightmare. So is everything else. The auto trans doesn't like to shift when you push it hard neither.

Maybe check out www.newcougar.org and see what the known issues are on them. IIRC they got decent fuel mileage. For basic transportation it would work. Google some engine bay pics if you plan on working on it yourself and you make the decision. I can't help on that one as the last Cougar in the family was a 96 w/ the 4.6L on the MN12 platform.

Well it looks like i'll just find a different kind of car to look at. Probably stick with GP's. I want a car that is around 1500-2000 dollars and doesn't have a lot of major issues and is easy to work on and it seems like GP's are the only cars that fit what I want. Once you fix the LIM gaskets, plug the TB coolant ports, and change the elbows to aluminum theyre decently reliable....

Its too bad those cars look like they had a lot of aftermarket and even factory potential. They don't look too bad on the outside but the performance of them is what hurts. My ex had one it she also always had issues maintenance wise.

You didn't mention you wanted power, lots of 4 banger economy cars line up to your needs.

My wife bought one years ago....around a '99 to a '02 I believe. Ran like a champ but was a terrible thing to drive in snow! Never experienced this in ANY other front wheel drive vehicle but that back end would swing around on you when you least expected it. She told me about this happening to her twice and of course I assumed it was her driving. Found out myself that this would happen in the blink of an eye when you LEAST expected it! Hard to see out of....but it was a sharp car that never let her down. Zero maintenance issues . Good luck!

Buy a $500 Honda and drive it.

My Uncle had a 99? or something like that. Anyways it was small, had tons of service issues and was slow. If you want a cheap economy car get a Honda/Toyota/Nissan. The Sentra SE-R's are pretty cheap and for what they are produce a decent amount of torque. If you are looking for 2 door why not a Prelude/Civic SI/Integra GSR? The SI and GSR have a huge aftermarket support and the cars are cheap to get.

I agree with that!! Bought a beat up 1985 CRX si for $50, put some time and effort into it with very little money and had a heck of a reliable little car that I put another 100K on! Had 300K on when I sold it to a guy for $500 and he was tickled. Been trying to find more to fix up and sell ever since.
