What cars have you guys had good experience with that are american built. It seems like it's really hard to find anything that breaks over 35 mpg's highway thats not some foreign built POS.

A lot of foreign cars are not POS's. About anything small is going to get you over 35 hwy nowadays, I would stay away from some of the Fords, I've been hearing a lot of big tranny issues from them. A friend with a Focus has had 3/4 trannies in 3 years.

My 2012 Cruze 1LT/RS automatic 1.4L Turbo gets 32 around town and 40-42 on the interstates. I love this car!

The 2013 Malibu Eco 2SA behind it gets a true 36-37 on the highway and around 25-27 average around town. My wife drives that one.

How good of a ride does the cruz have?

I know its not gonna be like a caddy but is it like a honda civic type ride or better?

I would avoid anything with a Constant Velocity Transmission. Those haven't been perfected yet.

Personally, if I was in the market for a new car, I would be strongly looking at the new Regals or Imalas.

It's a typical firm smaller car ride. I would compare it as better than my Civic, but not near the Malibu. I enjoy the car very much. The 1.4 T engine makes its tq down low and makes normal driving feel like it had much more engine than it does. If you like to reach deep into the rpms it will disappoint you as it runs out of air and falls flat in the upper half of the revs. I don't hot rod it, so it doesn't bother me. Sound from the suspension is well controlled, much better than my 05 civic was. The ride and feel is of a much more expensive car than it is. I am going to buy another Cruze this coming summer. I really love the car.

I guess it depends on your use, but I drive 25 miles each way to work through small towns at under 55 mph each day for work. I have no need for a larger car than this Cruze. My wife has the Malibu and I have a 2012 Camaro LS3 toy car with 4800 miles in 2 years and a 99 F-350 7.3L PSD crew cab long bed 4x4 that sets mostly unused. We also have a 2011 Lexus 250C hard top convertible that rarely leaves the garage and only had 8000 miles in 2 years. I don't want a big or expensive car as my work car, I park beside a pair of 500 foot cooling towers at work that mist paint death onto our cars. I lease the cruze for 24 months and 30K miles and swap for another one. We all have reasons for our likes, I fancy the low cost and high fuel economy in a nice looking package. The Cruze gets it done for me.

I can get into the low 40's w/my wife's malibu w/the cruise on around 63mph or so. This is on summer gas of course. It's a pretty nice car.

My buddy has a turbo cruze. It gets good mpg but the seats are awful. I test drove a diesel cruze and was getting over 60mpg @ 60. It was a little nicer than my buddy's car but seats still sucked.

Clearly I'm driving the Cruz wrong... I've never seen more than 29 combined after driving at least 10 of them 1500 miles each time.

If I drive for attitude, I get 27-ish. If I drive for fuel economy I get 32-35. The driving style makes a massive change. One time I hyper miled and got 36 mpg over the tank commuting to work for two weeks.

Admittedly, I tend to drive like I stole it.

Run one full tank with super light throttle starts and no passing, no closing the door on people that want to get in front of you, just be like a little old lady. One tank. Watch what happens. You'll be amazed.

Before we dwell further into this question define what American made means to you. Because right now most GM cars are global, mostly Korean/European/Australian vehicles, mostly assembled overseas. Honda and Toyota surprisingly make the most "Murican" vehicles, I think Accord uses like 80% parts made in US and is assembled here as well.
2001 GT Special Edition - 208k miles, junkyard status. Part out in progress.
    2015 Mazda Mazda3 S Touring - 39000 miles, bone stock.

Who gives a crap if its assembled here! That annoys the hell out of me! Umm profit still goes to OVERSEAS to the company that owns them! Honda, Toyota, Nissan, BMW, Audi........ none are "Domestic/American" vehicles!
