You know... In spite of how much work this whole process has been, I've really enjoyed every step along the way. My pace of learning the LS platform has been kind of like drinking from a fire hose, and I've only scratched the surface. I'm sure when I get into wiring and especially tuning, my brain is going to start bleeding.
Still weighing my options for the transmission. Convert the 4wd 80e or hold out for a 2wd 80e. I might have to skip over that for now and tear into the truck. Maybe I'll pull it in the garage this weekend.
You have anything in mind? Old truck maybe?
how much of a process is it to convert to 2wd?
According to what I've read you need the following parts,
2wd tail shaft (longer than 4wd)
2wd tail shaft housing
Lube hole orifice plug thing
Maybe a tail shaft housing o-ring
Reluctor/tone ring for rear planet (it's in the T-case on 4x4's)
Rear speed sensor (again, in the T-case on the 4x4's)
You have to tear all the guts out of the case to install the 2wd tail shaft, as it's the first thing to go in. Add the tone ring to the rear planet. Install the orifice cup plug in the rear of the case. Pop the rear speed sensor in. Slap the 2wd tail shaft housing on. That's all.
Edit: You have to completely dissemble it to the sub-assembly level.

I would imagine the 4 wheel drive units would cost more, so maybe you could do a trade, sounds like a lot of work to do a swap.
Yeah, I have to weigh my options. Take my time and see what pops up. I just hate to give up my known good unit for a mystery trans.
Maybe I'll be adding 80e rebuilds to my resume.
if you can do a 65, I bet you can do an 80, one way to find out for sure though.
on a side note, would you have any interest in converting a 97-02 65 to an 04? I've been thinking about buying an 04 comp g and am testing the waters on if a trans swap would be feasible.
those are the most stylish of all the old trucks, and are better looking than many new trucks. not that you need my approval, but it's there anyway. I browse the classifieds periodically and see one or two for sale on occasion. those ones are a bit lighter than the newer ones too. it's funny that a lot of them came from the factory with a 6 cylinder engine.
Just sold the T-case for $500. That puts me at a net positive of $150 so far.
Well, now that the car is gone I have room in the garage for the truck. Figured it was time for a formal introduction and some detailed pictures.
The body is in really decent shape. The ding in the right bed side is the only thing that stands out to me.
Gonna need a tonneau cover though
And some minor odds and ends
Interior is very "utilitarian"
PO was a smoker
Funny. The donor motor has just about the same amount of miles
This should hose right off (?)
Love Arizona vehicles
Bye
It fits with a ton of room to spare
This may be a tighter fit
Here we go!
