Now you tell me...
Headliner is in
Turns out upholstery is not my thing. Couple wrinkles and an uneven wrap where it meets the windshield. Looks not fresh and new. Fits the theme of the truck. Still better than it was, and only $25. Shrug.
Now I can focus on the trans.
It adds character. lol
looks good to me. carry on.
like i used to tell people when they got new siding, or a new roof color, the new color stands out to them and they get unsure if they like it or not, i tell them give it two weeks. you wont even notice any more lol its the truth too.
Alright... Back into this thing.
Bottom shot
Because I don't have the special tool for removing the pump, I did this. Locking the vise grips on those lugs allowed me to pry against them to loosen the pump. Then it just lifted right out.
Pump out
Little further
Had to stop there to make a trip to the hardware store. Twelve point bolt stopped me. Side note: Leave it to GM to have one imperial size screw when everything else is metric.
Gutted
To pull the plug in the back, I just drilled/tapped it then ripped it out with a slide hammer.
New orifice plug installed
Tone ring installed. Actually went pretty well. Put the output carrier in the freezer and hit the ring with a little heat and it dropped half way on. Tapped it the rest of the way with a brass rod. Mint.
There she is poking through the output speed sensor hole
And there it is mostly back together
I'll call the 4wd to 2wd "swap" portion done. Now I will work on the Trans-Go kit mods/install. I need to order some parts. Just a pump gasket and seal, but I wanted to wait till the swap part was done in case I hosed anything up. All in all, it went pretty smooth!
Working my way through the HD2 kit install. FULL install by the way...
3/64" Hole on an angle? No problem!
Instruction say use both springs for soft shifts, large spring for firm shifts or small spring alone for even firmer shifts. What do you think I did?
Also made a trip to the hardware store. Got some long bolts to use as assembly guide pins.
Didn't snap many pictures during the process. It's a pain to grab pictures while doing trans work. Your hands are always covered in ATF. More tomorrow.
Don't be shocked if the 1-2 shift gives you a pretty good jolt with the firmer shift spring in there.
Like is traffic or low speed 1-2 shifts when you aren't in the throttle much.
Got some parts today
With the pump gasket in hand, I could install the pump. Still waiting on the pump seal, but I can put that in anytime.
Thought I screwed up when I put the pump in before doing the boost valve. Turns out you can get to it through the bottom! Also popped in the new filter seal.
Accumulator with new spring installed
Valve body ready to go on
MPS was caked with clutch material. Wish I would have gotten a before picture. It's not recommended to use any kind of solvents, so I submerged it in ATF and hit it with a toothbrush. Think it worked pretty well.
Feels nice to actually use (almost) all the pieces in a shift kit. Here's all that's left over. Spacer is for the older style pressure regulation valve, and spring is for softer shift
And here's all the parts that get replaced.
Valve body should go on tomorrow. Might actually have this thing back on the ground before the weekend.
That was fast. Lol
So how does the 4l80 compare to the 4t65 in terms of ease to work on? Lol
Not as fast as I'd like!
My opinion? I think the 4L80e is a less complex unit. Everything runs on one axis. No chain, no channel plate, no differential. I'm actually looking for another 80e to have as a spare and do a full rebuild.
That's a great idea, spares are always good to have in hand.
But it's not like I'm only saying that to see more completely disassembled transmissions... Lol
4L60e and 4L80e are a breeze compared to a 4T65e, thats for sure.
I found a used 4L80e for $100 on craigslist with a no forward problem, too bad I have nothing to use one for.
On rare occasion, I'll see an old style 80e pop up for a decent price. I've never seen a 7 bolt bell housing listed for a price anyone would be willing to pay.
I need to find someone out east (truck country) who would be willing to strap one (or two) of these cheap transmissions to a pallet and drop it off at a Fastenal...
Valvebody, MPS, harness, lube tube, and filter installed.
Pan squeaky clean. Thought about painting it but decided that would be a little to flashy for this truck
Pan on
Should be back on the cart tomorrow.
Lift off
Now I can finally get a good look at the shaft.
New pump seal
Good thing I have all the right tools
With that installed, I could put the torque converter back on. Good night that thing is heavy
New bushing in the output housing
And seal
Housing installed
Test fit was a success
And just like that, your 4wd 4L80e is now a 2wd 4L80e. Couldn't be easier!
