274 GB in use by OS and apps.

$500 to store that data with very little room to grow isn't my idea of value.

I wouldn't get that one, $500 is crazy. I recommend a 60-120GB size. That should be plenty for running programs. The 60 GB Mushkin one I got months ago is now $114. Newegg has 120 GB ones now for about $170. Again, you use the mechanical drive or whatever else for storage. Especially for laptop it's the way to go as they use much less power (no moving parts). They're the same size as the standard laptop HD, but they come with adapter mounts for your desktop PC. NegativeOne's laptop is probably a screamer.

Holy f*ck Matt!!! You really have a 6900 series GPU?!! Very nice!!!

The video card is a screamer, but I'd bet that your CPU is bottle-necking the whole system. If it was me though I'd take your processor out and swap it with another 775 socket processor . I can personally vouch that the Q8200 socket 775 processor isn't too bad of a CPU, just don't plan on overclocking it as they aren't too good in that department. Other than OC'ing, I've ran plenty of stress tests on my system and I'm amazed at how well the Q8200 does.
That and even though your RAM is screaming (amazed at those CAS latencies), I'd throw in another gig just to make it an even 4. Don't waste money on anything more than what you'd need though cause RAM is one thing where having too much will NEVER give you any kind of benefit. Your computer only uses what it needs to, so don't go adding 12GB of RAM just cause you think it will make your computer faster. I added 2 gig extra to my system, but even when gaming I hardly ever use more than 3 or 4 of my 6 gigs. The only time I ever need all 6 is when I'm running stress tests or doing serious encoding.

And SSD's are awesome, but I don't have enough money to buy one big enough for what I'd want to use it for. I just make do with my Caviar Black instead.

lol my HP laptop is faster than most your guys pc's.
    i5 2410m 2.3 OC'd @ 3.2 (upgrade coming soon)
    6GB 1667 Ram
    ATI 6770m OC'd @ 875 core/ 1050 memory (soon to be an 6990m)

My laptop eats up most desktops and at a click of a button, I turn off all my overclocking, and get 5 hour portable laptop. All that for 950 shipped brand new.
current mods: DIY FWI, res & u-bend delete, SD headers mated with custom 3in downpipe, 2.5in catback with turbomax muffler, autolite 104s, 180 t-stat, poly mounts, can tune, 3.4 mps
soon to be mods: NIC cam, possibly dna springs

    98L36:

    Funny story about the memory...

Errors when running four sticks, none when running three.

Does not matter which stick I remove.

CPU is a major bottleneck... Game dependent though.

    Deus Ex? CPU limited.

    Metro? GPU limited.

Looking into a 2500K w/8 GB of memory...

Probably going to wait till Ivy Bridge is released.

Nice setup there Kyle, but I'm not much of a laptop person. And not sure if you're aware of this or not but I wouldn't go bragging too much about your CPU cause (according to this page) it's a dual-core, albeit a pretty fast one once turbo boost kicks in. In applications that only utilize 2 cores it is probably quick but I'd expect it to fall behind in applications that can utilize 4 or more cores.
And your vid card is impressive for a laptop but since it's a mobile edition it isn't quite as good as it's desktop counterparts (the 6770 or 6990). For example I can run my Vapor-X 5770 at OC'ed settings of 960 core/1445 clock or stock settings of 860 core/1200 clock.
Here are some pages on the 6770m and 5770 if you want to compare them.
    6770m info
    5770 info
It's deceiving based on the series numbers (the 5 or 6 at the beginning), but quite simply even a 5770 will put the 6770m in it's place.
Still a quite impressive laptop though. Will definitely be something once you get that 6990m in there.

Matt: Yea, I was contemplating build a new 2500k system but I'm also gonna wait till the Ivy Bridge release.

Wait should be easy considering I've been running a P4 2.8 OC'd to 3.2 for years....

Ram utilization also depends on which OS your running.

It seems 8 is presently the sweet spot between cost and performance.

Comcast said the fastest they had here was 8, proving they don't even know their own services.

Just installedCorsair Force GT 128Gb on my:

    Asus p6td
    I7-920 @ 4.00 GHZ
    6 Gb @1600 dominator ram
    GTX 295 VPU
    Toughpower 850
    X-Fi platium

System much more responsive now. No waiting for anything. 128Gb is plenty to run Windows and games. 6 Gb of memory is plenty, I never use more than 4. Play Crisis on all highest settings.
