got this crazy idea today not sure if it will work or not or not but could you use car speakers with a surround sound reciever for a house? i'm pretty sure you could buy speakers and make boxes cheaper than buying them if you could do it this way. plus my roomate has a huge old school system but the speakers are blown and i was wonderin if we could replace them. it has the clips where you put a bare wire into the unit. tell me what you think

Im no brainiac when it comes to electrical but I think they wouldn't work because theyd have a different resistance than in a car and the power would be different so theyd probly blow? Just a guess there.

Check out Parts Express. They have a a bunch of good speakers, including in-wall and also drivers and components if your roommate wants to fix his vintage speakers. Car speakers would work with a home receiver but really no advantage to using them, unless you have some laying around and want to put them to use.

I used a car box and amp for bass sometimes for war games or explosion movies. Just use an old pc power supply for the 12v

most home recievers dont like 2ohm loads and under some dont even like 4, it really doesnt matter as long as the resistance on the speakers isnt super low. i would figure out what the reciever can handle and bass my decision on that.

well i plugged in an old speaker i had laying around from my truck into the home theater system at my rents place and it worked. not sure about them blowing didnt think that far ahead. i got 2 12's in my car that i dont use very often and i was thinking i could use one of them buy an amp for it(pretty sure they make amps that plug into the reciever unit) and then buy a couple sets of 4 in speakers(give or take) about $80. also thought about getting something that would fit my car in case this idea goes horribly wrong i could still use them. and since we already got the unit not a big deal for that part. how could you use the pc power supply? and this system is from like the 1970's so not sure how i would know

Most car speakers are 4ohms, so some older/lower end receivers will have a hard time driving them. You can get some pretty nice drivers off the website Burbman linked to pretty damn cheap. And if you're willing to build the whole things from scratch, there are also websites devoted to building your own home theater speakers, complete with detailed blueprints (links to every part you need, dimensions to cut the wood for the box to, how to tune the crossover, etc). Some geeks have already gone through all the trouble of testing and retesting over and over again to come up with the perfect combination of box dimensions, crossover tuning, drivers/tweeters/woofers, etc. Speaker Design Works. There are even kits available now with all the internals you need (tweeters, drivers, woofers, crossovers, etc), or you can even get the same kits with the boxes for them, too. Just install everything, and glue the box together.
One of the local guys on w-body.com is big time into building them. I'm actually borrowing a set right now that he built for under $200 for everything. It's the same as these, but with 4" drivers instead of 3". Scrappy. There's a version with 1 4" speaker per side vs. 2 for less here Overnight Sensations MT Speaker Pair Kit 300-706. They sound incredible, and have a frightening amount of bass considering no subs, and that the drivers are an entire 4". I also listened to The Dark Knight on 2 other sets of speakers he had, including a set that cost him $600 to build (I believe it's these, but he built them with a slightly larger box Statements_Monitor), and holy crap they sounded awesome. The separation in every little sound effect (eg sound of every little thing the bullets ricocheted off of or shattered) was crystal clear. Granted $600 isn't cheap, but to buy speakers of that caliber from a name brand at a high end audio store would cost you $1500+ easily. There's no question you can get a LOT more for your money if you're willing to build your own speakers.

I would do it but they take a different kind of power. I love my car American Bass mids and I hooked it up to my receiver and it over powered my bookshelf speakers. I would put car American Bass 6.5 mids in a box and maybe some low powered car subs, but I dont know too much about power conversion yet.

He made the box for his himself because kits weren't available for them at the time I believe, but here's a link to the kit that includes everything you need to put them together (minus the tools and glue, of course), even the pre CNCed box.
