Watch Video of a Tube Chassis Mustang Powered by a Cummins Diesel Run Low 5s in the Eighth! | BangShift.comBangShift.com
Mike Wood’s Duramax powered Mustang was a huge success on Drag Week for the couple of outings it went on. Knocking down 10-second elapsed times while also knocking down over 35mpg (including racing!) showed lots of guys in the hot rodding world the potential of diesel engines in high performance applications outside of say, truck pulling. Well, there is a new diesel Mustang sheriff in town and this one is packing Cummins heat and enough snot to go deep into the 8s. Considering that there is a diesel powered funny car out there now and the flopper is in the 7.90 range, this Mustang is totally crazy.
Details are scant at this point, but what we can tell you is that there are a couple of turbos at work here and they take a while to spool. Also, we have read that the car is powered by used cooking oil. That, we cannot confirm but it certainly would be cool if this proved to be true. If this car is truly capable of running low 8s (a 5.30 eighth mile pass is equivalent to about an 8.25-8.30 quarter mile run) it would be one of the quickest diesel drag machines in the country and certainly the quickest one with doors. The floppers and dragsters out there are quicker yet, but it is cooler (in our opinion) to see a door slammer hauling this much tail!
This car has Drag Week written all over it!
