The driver of a white 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix GT, Adam Brimmer, 26, of Flint (in black shorts and a T-shirt) surveys what’s left of his vehicle after he narrowly escaped death Friday morning when his car was sliced in two by a passing train at the Lake Nepessing Road railroad crossing. Photo by PHIL FOLEY LAPEER — “He’s lucky to be alive,” said an old man leaning on a cane as he lit his cigarette on the side of Lake Nepessing Road Friday morning.
A few feet up the road a blond woman tightly hugged Adam Brimmer, 26, of Flint.
Just before 7 a.m. the Chicago-bound Amtrak trained sliced through Brimmer’s white 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix GT, turning the back half of his car into a twisted ball of metal.
“I was on my way to work,” said Brimmer, adding that he was lighting a cigarette when he looked up and saw the crossing lights. He said the next thing he knew, the passing Amtrak train was scraping along what had been the back seat of his car.

Witnesses say Brimmer went around a crossing gate at the track on Lake Nepessing Road. Photo by PHIL FOLEY “I heard a chunkachunka sound and I kicked the door open,” said Brimmer, who suffered what appeared to be only minor scrapes and bumps.
The force of the impact sent the back half of his car about 25 yards farther north along Lake Nepessing Road. A nearby building owner said one of the car’s rear tires came crashing through a window of the unoccupied building, killing a mouse.
Debris from the car was scattered across the front lawn of the Tax Shack and down the road. The car’s gas tank ended up in front of a driveway nearly 50 yards from the railroad crossing.
Traffic on Lake Nepessing Road was stalled for more than an hour while deputies completed their investigation and the debris was removed.
There were no reported injuries on the train.
Hill said witnesses told him that Brimmer tried to beat the train and went around the crossing gates. He added that while his investigation wasn’t complete, he expected to cite Brimmer with several citations.
