Hey guys, brand new here. Have not had a grand prix since my 1986!

My son turned 16, and has been saving up for a bit, and we are considering maybe a GTP, and came across this one. Seems pretty nice, one owner, well taken care off etc. But, high miles, 178,000 miles.

It's a 2001 GTP Special Edition Coupe. Price is $3,995

    Thoughts on this?

    Thanks for your time!!

it really depends on how the motor has been taken care of. with proper maintnance, 178k is nothing to worry about. trust me these motors are nealry bullet proof. dads monte has 308k and still runs better then my prix with 187k. so id say no, milage isnt an issue.

I would be worried about the condition of the transmission. Thats quite a bit of miles on it but if the transmission is in good shape, I would say go for it. Like everyone says these engines are bullit proof. I have a 1997 Grand Prix SE with 120,000 miles on it and it runs like a champ which is why I recently purchase a 2002 Grand Prix GT with only 40,000 miles.

Check the trans put. That kinda mileage is what your stuck with anymore. As long as it was maintained. Should be fine.

It's about 6 hours away..so are thinking of heading out..maybe Monday to take a look...test drive it. Not sure how to best find problems with the tranny. Just by how it drives?

If the tranny is what you are looking at your most likely problem will be with OD. Just take it for a test drive and be sure to go into and out-of OD A LOT. And see how well it does speeding up in OD. Give it just a little more gas to go faster but not enough to make it downshift.

It's going to be hard to tell if the transmission is good just by driving it. You will want to find out if it has been serviced recently. Grand prix transmissions are known to be the weakest link in this car. If you blue book this car it values around 5,000 so you could be getting a good deal. The interior looks to be in good condition but there is a little rust on the cars body but if that doesn’t bug you I would say go for it.

Looks like it. Could be a little on the trunk area aswell. Its hard to tell but grand prix's do tend to rust by the rear wheel areas. I have problems with rust in that area on my 97 grand prix. It's repairable if you know what your doing.

I see they first listed the car on Oct 18 for $4,995. So they have been dropping their price..they do not sound to flexible (on price) when i talk to them now.

I'd pass. Personally, I wouldn't purchase any Grand Prix with over 130K. That is of course if I knew for a fact the owner took extremly good care of the car. With that being said my current GTP has 198K on the odometer.

Purchased my first car (SURPRISE! also a Grand Prix lol) with 157k on the odometer and it runs excellent. Kinda stole it from the guy though, it had an engine problem that my dad (an auto mechanic) said was easily fixable...cause of that I got it for $2,200 when now with the engine fixed it blue books for almost $5,000. Like others have said as long as the tranny seems good I'd go for it. These engines are one of the best GM ever made so I wouldn't worry about the mileage on the engine, just make sure the tranny isn't shot.

    $1200.

Add an SC and it'd be worth $1500.

Nixon, are you saying it's worth $1,500? It has a supercharger.
