Thread: time to look for a bike

So as gas prices are starting to go up im throwing up the possibility of getting a sport bike...im leaning into the 06+ r6s but am open to cbrs gsxs or ninjas. What have you guys owned in the past or what's your opinion on the best bike? Im a bike noob so I gotta take it easy at first but once I learn I wanna have the right bike not start on a 250cc learn and have to buy a new bike...I wanna start at 600ccs

well, here is how they normally break down between companies (based off liter bikes, not your lame 600).

kawasaki: ultimate handling bike. shorter wheel base means quick turn in.
yamaha: bike power bike.
suzuki: all around bike, but they are all fugly.
honda: all around bike, will last FOREVER.

on my list of bikes to get and why (all the 2004-2007 models):

- ninja zx10r: so amazing to look at and they come in the best colors
- honda 1000rr: runner up because ive always been a honda fan
- yamaha R1: sexy looking bike, but they are super uncomfortable.

notice how i didnt even consider a suzuki? they are so damn ugly. i also noted that the yamahas are uncomfortable, which is true for anything over a 45 minute ride or so for just about all of the newer sport bikes, but yamaha seems to be the worst riding position for a longer ride. either way, the new bike will be an around town cruiser and it will probably be modded to high hell (think extended swing arm turbo highway monster) and ill just ride my old 94 CBR1000 when i want to go on longer trips since it's more of a couch on wheels than anything.

take it from someone who has been riding their whole life: you DO want that crappy bike to lear on before you buy a nice bike and either kill yourself and/or the bike in the process. buy some crappy 70/80s bike just to learn how to ride a bike, then graduate. if you straight up buy a R6 you're not going to respect it and you're going to end up hurting yourself.

DO NOT BUY A NICE, NEW BIKE RIGHT AWAY. SERIOUSLY.

You make a good point on starting with a crappy bike....I witness a buddy buy a brand new r6 2 years aho and break his **** trying to be cool within a month...I have my eyes on a 95 ninja for 1500 which wouldn't be bad for now...plus the gf wants a small one too

A good example of a cheap bike is my 91 250 night hawk which I paid less then 500 for

seriously, craigslist is littered with old bikes for cheap.

ive bought multiple bikes for under $500.

Take advantage of your local motorcycle safety course.
Start off with a smaller CC bike (already mentioned). Plus if you want MPGs a newer 600 or liter bike is only going to give you 30-40ish. My 1990 honda 400 got 50mpg beating on it and redlining it all the time.

suggestion wise. i know you were joking, but the dude is actually looking for some serious information from people who actually ride bikes.

I have a 79 honda cx500 i have about $20 in it and it gets 50+ mpg beating the piss out of it. You should def buy and older honda first then move up to a cbr600 if you want to. I used to have a 88 cbr600 and i prefer my cx more just because it is so much more comfortable to ride, just not nearly as fast.

My first bike was an enduro, a 76 175cc, fun bike. Like bio said though dont start with a new bike, you will end up eating a small amount of road at some point. So make sure you wear gear, you never see me ride without leathers and a full face helmet. I used to not wear any of that but I laid down at about 25 mph once, I at least had a helmet on, but after seeing how messed up the helmet was, well I always wear one now.
An old crusier is a good bike to start with, something that you can handle and learn how to ride. Also something that you could get on and ride for a day comfortably.
Also this is a good thing to take the course they offer Motorcycle Safety Foundation Its an excellent course.

and also I could get up on my about whinny crotch rockets, but I wont. I've always been an older cruiser guy, newest bike I ever had was an 86 and I currently ride an 82 that my dad bought brand new.

Just bought a 81 Yamaha Special II 400cc in early April for $400.. Awesome bike

An endro would be a good choice, the suzuki dm?400 is a good bike, plenty of power and fun to ride, plus they take dumps good.
