The 1969 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 was a performance monster, featuring an all-aluminum engine displacing 427 cubic inches that was originally intended for racing. Just 69 units were built, and they are highly coveted by collectors today. Perhaps it shouldn't come as a surprise, then, that Chevrolet chose to resurrect this classic moniker for what it is calling the fastest and most technologically advanced Camaro ever built.
At this point, specifications are still preliminary, but Chevrolet is estimating that its supercharged and intercooled 6.2-liter LSA V8 engine will put out around 550 horsepower and 550 pound-feet of torque. Those ponies will be sent to the rear wheels via a six-speed manual transmission using a dual-disc clutch that's necessary to properly harness all those horses. There's also a dual-mode exhaust system that alters the sound level and character in response to engine rpm.
Chevrolet tells us that its goal was to built "a Camaro intended to reach optimal lap times on top road-racing circuits and excellent driving dynamics on the street." To that end, the 2012 Camaro ZL1 will be fitted with a new electric power steering system and Magnetic Ride Control that will offer both Tour and Sport modes. Brembo brakes measuring 14.6-inch (370 mm) in the front (with six-piston calipers) and 14.4-inch (365 mm) at the rear (with four-piston calipers) bring it all back down from speed.
Naturally, there's an updated body kit to differentiate the ZL1 from lesser machines. Most notable are the redesigned fascia that features a front splitter, vertical fog lamps and air intakes designed for brake cooling. There's also a new aluminum hood with a raised, satin black-finish carbon fiber insert that uses a unique air extractor that is said to increase downforce by directing oncoming air over the car. There's also a spoiler at the rear of the car and new 20-inch aluminum wheels fitted with specially developed Goodyear Supercar F2 tires.
Chevrolet promises to have the Camaro ZL1 on dealer lots in the beginning of 2012, and it will be available in any color offered on the Camaro.

So. GM changed the RPO code. It was supposed to be the next Z28, which is the car in the second Transformers movie. I like ZL1. Hopefully they will use the Z28 code for something cool.
Yeah I hope they do too.
On a side note hear is the original story of the First ZL-1's.

Because i love you guys so much i put the two together in what we call a "merger".
I'm one of those people. I don't really think it's ugly though. At first I did, but they grew on me, just like the S197's and the revised 11 stangs. I'm excited to see how it does when people start adding the mods. If I had the money for this and I was going to buy a camaro though, I would just assume buy an ls1 fbody and throw a wealth mods to it. Not trying to get into an apples to oranges discussion, I just prefer the look of a ws6 or an ss
Yeah I've been thinking of adding some 24's and stitching some 100 dollar bills to my seats to throw of the gaydar.
The announcement of the terrifyingly-powerful Camaro ZL1 must be causing muscle automobile followers to drool. The specifics are gradually but surely being released. The automobile promises to be anything a Camaro lover could possibly desire. Source of articleetails on Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 slowly emerging.I've heard lots of comment about this new Chevrolet. And I think it was all a positive one.looking forward to ride in here.

All the parts have already been decided. I've been looking them over on my catalog at work. It is nice that its a LSA motor with its own supercharger, completely different from the vettes, but I hate the fact that the interior is keeping the same. Its new and different, but still so much the same.
I hate the ride and feel and interior of the 2010/11 Camaros. Drove several at the dealership and a friends ex owns a fully optioned SS (hard to find white/orange too), drove it and wasn't impressed. Too sad to say that I honestly feel they downgraded from 02 when production stopped. They came out newer, fatter, and slower, but with more power and less efficiency after almost 10 yrs. At least this one will be supercharged, but heck, a few bolt-ons to an older SS and you will stay side by side for about $30-35k less
