Thread: Fuel Economy???

I ran across while skimming the turbo section. I am not posting this to bash the guy but just thought maybe some of you over here would like to follow this one. I am curious to say the least but doubt it will work.

Seems a crazy risk to me, but I'm no expert. I go the safe route, stay off the gas unless needed. gets me over 26mpg around town and I sleep well at night not worrying about what damage could be done by an experiment like turning off 3 cyl lol

I posted my two cents. I did a lot of research into DoD stuff before it actually came out (as a college project). He's not doing it right.

Not sure about it either, but at least the guy got conversation going after the CGP anger passed. Maybe something will come out of it (postive or negative).

I for one encourage this guy in his research. I hope he is on to something. Anything to save gas. Hes trying to think outside the box.

I just finished reading that thread again. It is 75% people bashing because it isn't what everyone else is doing already and 25% people actuallying giving real input. I am very curious to see the out come. I don't think it will work, but I am not expert.

Wouldn't it be better to find a way to running a higher afr while in open loop? In his case the the engine is still doing the same amount of work to pull in air as it was while running on 6 cylinders, but getting 50% of the power output. But I suppose as long as the car only needs that 50% power to keep moveing he will see a gain. Or am I way off base here?

You would then still be injecting fuel in the front three cylinders? Now you would just be wasteing it.

Pulling the plug wires would not work. The injectors would still be spraying fuel into a cylinder that has no spark thus not giving the result that guy is going for. He seems to be putting relays on the injectors to shut them off.

They were VERY QUICK to jump on this guys ass to bash and hate on him, but he has my curiosity. I dont much care for his turbo set up or his hackjob intercooler mounting ability but thats a different thread.

I truely believe it will work. It is the same thing they are doing on the V8 grand prix right? Also, yeah pulling the plug wires is the dumbest thing I've ever heard... maybe get the boost to 35psi... then you might get close to running like a diesel

Seriously, I would consider trying this (on a friends car) because I like the idea... and since it has been done by gm dodge honda etc. it obviously has some "spark" of significance.

3 years ago I had my 97gt prix and I would go to neutral for 2.5 miles on a long slightly downhill stretch in a 35 zone (start at 40 at the top) coast down to the 25 zone (doing 24-27mph) and then where the turn was start her back up. I got 23+mpg on that tank of gas vs 20.5-22 normally. It definitely was visible. I duplicated these results twice.

So Andrew how hard is this guys new idea to rig up on to a toggle switch?

Far from. Nothing is happening to the valve train like it does on the LS4. Shutting the valves on the dead cylinders is a key part of cutting cylinders for economy.

It's called DoD (displacement on demand) or now GM calls it AFM (active fuel management). It's not a hybrid setup, and it's been around for a few years.
