Retail from $39.99 to $59.99 for some steel ones.... A couple examples:
These are for those like me who have a mountain bike, with a 20mm through axle instead of the smaller more traditional 3/8" quick release axles. I used to have that style on my old forks before I took a big jump and blew the seals out of it:
The new fork I have I got on a trade in with the old prototype (2001 Bomber MCR-1 pictured above) one I was running with a crash replacement program they offer.
Those people who have the standard axles, unlike me now, can simply remove their front wheel, and lock their bike forks in the holder when they are transporting their bike around. Me...I have to let mine lean on theirs or nothing at all. So...decided to make me an adapter like the ones you can buy to hold mine like everyone else's.
I figured I could make me one from some scrap aluminum cheaper, maybe not necessary better, but still home made none the less. ;D
Went to The Yard Store in town here and got me some tubular aluminum pipe. Ran me a whole whopping $1.00 and they even cut it to length. The only thing I didn't have for the project. I had this extra plate left over from when I was making the GenV EVAP block of plates from aluminum, just the right size for the drop outs and its 6061 T6 aluminum plate too. Nice and strong.
The journey begins with some aluminum plate being turned into some billet drop outs.
Ya, lots of aluminum shavings on the work bench...the drop outs were hand made using a hack saw, and many different files to get them to the designed shape.
How it will sit when mounted in the fork on my bike
How it will sit in my holder:
Only thing left is to have it all welded together
and then do some more machining so the drop outs that over hang the tube so they can clear the I.D. f the fork when installed.
The will be finished up tomorrow hopefully. The shop up the street from my house said $10.-- to $12.-- to weld them up for me. Cool!
What do ya think? I will only have $13.00 tops in it cost, and about and hour and a half labor time wise, and only two cuts on my left index finger when the vice moved on me. LOL
