I was browsing the forums and came across a post by Bio that mentioned internet tuning and that got me thinking as to how this could be done.

First: someone needs to start s service where a person can rent hptuners. So that someone could install the software and hookup to the car needing the tune for the one time deal and not have to pay the giant price tag.

Second: the computer that is being used to tune with needs to be running at least winXP and be connected to the internet.

    Third
: the remote tuner person could use their computer with the windows remote access to take control of the tuning computer.

Fourth: A video chat might make this easier, but maybe a phone will be enough.

    This should work right?

you can watch everything they are doing with remote access. worst case scenario you'll have to shut it down.

although it is a good idea, the core charge for renting hptuners would be astronomical, so i doubt it would get anywhere. you'd be better off buying the software, getting a tune from someone such as Reptile e-mailed to you, then dialing it in on your own.

the tuner would also need an account name and password to access the pc. both of which could be changed and the account be deleted. I also wouldn't use my personal pc. Others might not have that option though.

deff wouldn't use the personal computer u can get a dirt cheap computer running xp for like 200 bucks. The core charge wouldn't be that much about$200. If I could afford the software id set up a service but alast I don't have the cash for hptuners or id already have it. I have many pc's that are just laying around (and yes they are laptops) All old and piles of crap....to me anyway. But they would be able to run hptuners no problem. Maby i can illegally download it lmfao if only

There has got to be some way to avoid the core charge.
and that email route would be trial and error, but with a much longer lag time.

until people can trust one another, cores are always charged on rentals, aside from places like blockbuster that have accounts linked to it as well as all your contact information.

you would basically get a canned tune for your mods, then tweak it to your preferences through the e-mail way and wouldn't have to pay for a tune again.

i suggested e-tuning, but it would require everyone to have a way of logging a scan for the tuner to review and something to be able to dump the new file. however, if you get this far then you might as well tune the car yourself.

Why not have it account based? I am thinking that local performance shops should be the ones to rent the Hp from. Someone that could track you down. And then core charge wouldn't have to be gigantic.
Is there a core charge to rent a car? (I legally can't so I really have no clue)

And with the email, it could take a lot longer than compared to on the spot tuning.

    SO
    $150 to rent hptuners ($50 rent + $100 core)
    $100 for the tune
    = $250 for a complete custom tune

    That remotely realistic?

If you make the core charge that low, it will not be long before somebody "rents" it for $150 and then never returns it. I had considered renting mine out, but I wouldn't do it unless they put down enough cash total to replace it if it didn't come back. Some would look at it as an opportunity to get HPTuners for $150 if that was all you had them put down.

As far as the car rental, the rental companies have insurance to protect them if you steal or total the car and they require a credit card to rent so they can charge you for any extra expenses.

Yea youd have to rent out for the cost of the tuner but just credit them their money back .

Another question is how much better is a good custom tune compared to a canned tune? How much would you be willing to pay for a custom tune over a canned tune?

Another idea: What if a local shop wanted to expand their target customer range. They would set up a tuning station that you can rent out for X amount of time. Hp tuners doesn't have risk being lost, station would be a cheap set up for the shop and it would be local for the consumer.

There is just too much risk involved for the tuner and not enough money to justify it. The truth hurts but there are too many young kids that own these cars that may be clueless or irresponsible. This goes for after the car is tuned as well, anything goes wrong with the car and it's most likely blamed on the tune because they don't know any better. A lot of tuners have stopped tuning altogether due to a couple of bad apples.

Its been a general rule of thumb that anything past a 3.4 pulley and that person should own a powrtuner or hptuner, or have someone local. Anything 3.4 or above, find a decent base tune and make sure you have the mods that tune is designed for and not install something that will throw that tune off like a larger tb.

yet another idea: What if someone rented out the cable that connects the pc to the car. Then the connected pc would run some software that would pass the info from the usb to the tuners pc.
Example of what the software could do: one could plug in their ipod from their computer but have it appear in the other pc's itunes. The itunes pc would think that the ipod is directly connected to the pc. and the pc with the ipod hooked up would not recognize the ipod being there.

Car >>>> pc (info not processed but pushed through) >>>>internet>>>>>>tuner pc (where info is processed).

    So
$200 for the tune (cost + $100 core on rental)
    $50 for magic USB software
= $250 for the tune, but cost of $150.

How much does Reptile charge for a tune?
