There is a possibility that you could use another late model conv. top mechanism for a "true" convertible. Maybe a Chrysler Sebring or (gack!) Toyota Camry Solara. The rear windows would take some engineering though.

fuvk convertibles. make it a ROADSTER.
God forbid you roll over.
here's more pics of the covert gp. scroll down alittle bit and you will see a engine bay pic, i noticed it has the 3.4 motor and it's supercharged that's interesting, i'd like to see that vs a stock gtp put lets say the 3.4 s/c'd gp is a regular hard top 2 dr, i bet the 3.4 makes more hp but i doubt more torque, those 3.4's have some balls, i know they have i think 25 less hp than the 3.8 n/a but i think they are faster in the quarter or 0-60 than the 3.8 gp cause they are lighter.
considering th 3.4 dohc weight a tonne, im doughtful its lighter, plus a 96+ 3.4 dohc engine is 210-215hp depending on the car it was in, regardelss more ponnies then a 3.8na.
plus they rev to 7k stock
If you think the 3.8 is a b*tch to work on, check out how tight a 3.4 with those DOHC heads is crammed in the GP engine bay. I changed an alternator on one once, holy cr*p!
no thats a 3400 sfi, similar to a grand am..
the 3.4dohc has 4.. yes 4 cams....
ok what about using a hard top G6's stuff? Might find a totaled one that you can pull the top and area around to make it work. It might only be a 2 seater though when your done. What about a Mustangs or 3rd gen Camaro's cloth top.
Rollbar might help you with rigidness.
yeah i think it would be cool to get a working top on it. it would be alot more work though. then you have to deal with it sealing perfectly and looking good when its up.
adding STB's and some other minor stuff would strenthen it up quite well, im actually looking at gettignm a cutlass supreme convertiible (yes a w-body vert) and drilling out all the spot rivets, ect and place all the gp parts onto the cutlass floor ect as it realistically wouldnt be that bad to do. otherwise there would be no functional rear little windoes ect, where the connvertible already has all that ready to go.
if i had the money a newer body style would be fun to do. but i think the older would look better. plus way cheaper to get the car. the G6 convertible already looks somewhat like the grand prix.
