The JMB is a nice piece - but FAR from perfect. A list of improvements would include:
1) The connection at the TB must be flexible/adjustable and really should fit OVER the inlet side and clamp down into the recessed area where the stock boot sits. This would probably require a custom made piece, but would be a great improvement. It would also allow the tube to be slightly shorter - making installation easier...the current design it TIGHT to the inside of the fender panel.
2) Block off plate should not be aluminum - or metal of any kind (unless special ordered for bling purposes). It should be a plastic (urethane, etc) to prevent rattling and scratching of the intake tube.
3) JMB's design was good, but the overall shape/contour of the TDC (sorry) unit was better, IMO. That would be a better unit to start from when developing the shape.
4) The question of whether or not a 4" tube is better than a 3" tube is really not that important. The relative gain with the larger tube is so minute that it's honestly not even worth discussing. Conversely - the cost of fabricating a 4" tube vs. 3" IS a factor to consider. I, for one; would not pay more to have no gain.
5) Yes, as with most anything - cost is king. If someone were to offer a unit with a variety of standard colors (powdercoated) for under $150, it would be a win.

You dont need a college degree to figure this out. Just some common sense. What good is a 4" intake when you have a 2.5" or 3" exhaust? You cant flow more into the engine than what the exhaust is able to flow out. Yes the POTENTIAL is there but you cant take advantage of it unless you are flowing insane amounts of air and then the exhaust would be holding you back anyway until you also upgrade the exhaust. so please convince us why a 4" intake is necessary for us oh wise one?
to be honest the power gain from 3" to 4" pipe is minimal. also, anyone with headers has just opened up the exhaust so much that it will never be a restriction again. hell, these cars do great with just a 3" downpipe. once the exhaust is opened up the next place is the intake. once the intake is opened up the next thing is the valvetrain. the stock cam and rockers can only move so much air. with higher ratio rockers or a cam with more lift, the car is able to move more air.
most people never get as far as wanting a cam in their car, but some do. id say once your intercooled or are running a cam its time to go open cone anyway. this negates all tubing anyway. so i guess what im getting at here is that you can run whatever you want, but you sure as hell want it to be bigger than the throttle body inlet, which is 3.5". my reasoning isnt so much about needing a bigger intake, its about the want for it and the room to grow from there.
also, dont be a smart ass.
i guess for me flow is somewhat important to me but im in it for the show to I like the way a good intake looks
