ok this came up on my screen twice while i'm online the last 2 days. there's a pop up download from window xp started scanning my computer saying it detected a virus on my computer and asked if i want to remove it. i had bad experienced with similar pop up before so i don't trust it. i click cancel, but it went ahead and started scanning my computer, ? the pop up had window xp logo and trade mark just like the real thing. i do scan my pc regulary, but nothing saying i have a virus. is this safe to download?

I had this on my mom's computer, It reads "windows anti-virus has detected..." The main problem with that is there is no Windows anti-virus, the only thing close is The malware removal tool..... It took me about two weeks to get rid of the virus your talking about cause it re-installs itself, It also blocks Ctrl+alt+del, and says that administrator has locked that function

DO NOT INSTALL IT!!! I use Microsoft's anti-spyware program "Windows Defender" and NOD32 antivirus. With those two in conjunction, I have not had a single problem. Pop-ups are very rarely seen, now.

If you get a virus that your virus scanner cleans but comes back, disable system restore or it will replicate itself from the back up. Windows protects the system restore files and if a back up is made of the virus then you have to disable the system restore.

Oh yea. Don't click any buttons within the popup window. They don't always do what they're labeled. That's where they get you. Right click the window's task bar label and close it out that way. Or, just right click the bar at the top of the window and select Close.

Your best defense against in closing those windows out, is to right click in the taskbar where you see the listing for that particular spam popup window. Once you right click on it, you will have the option to Close. Close the window in that menu and you dont have to touch the popup at all freeing yourself of any possible clicking on the popup.

Just a thoughtful tip for ya

And if that does not work? You can do into the Task Manager by right clicking on the taskbar and selecting the Task manager and goto Applications and you should see the popup there as well and close it there.

Lastly after that has been completed. Delete all your temp internet files on your web browser. Just a bit more added safety

More than likely NO. Why? Simply for the fact that some sites, well most sites, will leave what is called COOKIES in your temporary internet folder and some cookies will activate those kind of popups to trick you into clicking on and downloading their product to help rid your system of a supposid virus lurking in your system.

A couple of great programs I sware by on all my systems and my roommates cause she is hooked into my network are.....

    AVG Free Antivirus.

AVG Free Advisor - Installation files & documentation

And for spyware protection I recommend

    Spybot Search and Destroy

    The home of Spybot-S&D!

Those two programs have saved me a ton of hassels over the years. And the AVG is great cause its free or you can get the full blown version where you can purchase for either 1 year or 2 years that carries a site licences for as many computers as you own. Of course the cost increase with every additional PC added though.

    I hope this helps ya.

just to add to this I also do a scan on trend micro's site just to be sure, some viruses will block your installed scanners
